CITAD Trains Female Journalists On Digital Safety<\/div>\n

Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), has organized training for female journalists in Kaduna.<\/div>\n

The training which was held at AMDF office was meant to expose participants to some safety measures with regards to online operation particularly now that activities of frausters have become worrisome.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
The Deputy Executive Director of Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) Sekyen Dadik\u00a0disclosed this while taking participants through some safety tips.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to her, the objective is to get them well equiped for any eventualities as well as educate them on their rights.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Our safety does not rely on other people but on ‘me’. Everyone is a target. Never you think that you are nobody. Take advantage of your browser’s security features. She sounded.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Dadik charged participants\u00a0to be safety conscious while using some of these internet devices as the world has grown more sophisticated and complex.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
She said in as much as online platform such as face book,\u00a0 whatsapp, Instagram etc has its advantages, so also are the risks attached if information are not properly managed.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In her presentation, “Using Incognitio Mode Tips, Web Safety For Internet Browsing”,\u00a0 she noted.<\/div>\n
\"\"<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Some personal information are not meant for public domain.\u00a0Once information is shared, is eventually out of your control. Even if you delete it, that doesn’t mean the message is deleted all over. So before posting anything,\u00a0 think twice. Let’s limit our personal information we share. If you have any private thing you want to say, use private channel such as ‘messenger.’ Let’s stay safe when doing our work. She cautioned.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Individuals, she explained have some level of privacy protection they enjoy while connected to the Internet. Such covers the amount of online security available for personal and financial data, communications, and preferences as such should take advantage of it.<\/div>\n

Explaining further,<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“The complex issue of computer privacy covers the way your personal information is used, collected, shared, and stored on your personal devices and while on the Internet.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
Device users she said have the right to ask how information will be used and to review online privacy policies. It is not out of place therefore to ask questions because individuals have rights over their personal data<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Speaking on\u00a0<\/span>Data Privacy and protection on Internet, Dadik said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
“The unfortunate reality is that there are many people who have bad things happen to them over the Internet<\/div>\n
because they don’t take online safety seriously enough.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Reason being that some people think that they are safer than they are on the Internet which\u00a0 is attributed to some misconceptions.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
Three major misconception have been identified.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
“Misconception #1 \u2014 Cyber attacks aren’t very harmful<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Some people tend to think that the things they do on the Internet have few, if any, real-world consequences.<\/div>\n
At the very least, nobody can physically reach through a<\/div>\n
computer monitor from the Internet and assault them<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Misconception #2 \u2014 Other people will keep me safe on the Internet.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This is a common assumption among people who don’t understand how Internet safety works, or why it’s important. They assume that their computer, other people’s websites, or even the entire Internet or World Wide Web are designed to keep them safe and secure while using the Internet.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Misconception #3 \u2014 I’m not important enough to be a target<\/div>\n
Many people think that cyber attacks won’t happen to them because they don’t have anything important enough to destroy or steal. They think that cyber-criminals will only go after corporations,<\/div>\n
celebrities, or politicians and governments, since they have the most money or the most important<\/div>\n
information<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Still explaining,<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
“Virtually everybody on the planet has his\/her personal data i.e., name, address, pictures, email address, bank<\/div>\n
details, or medical information online.<\/div>\n
Data privacy has always been important. It\u2019s why people put locks on filing cabinets and rent safety deposit boxes at their banks.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
But as more of our data becomes digitized, and we share more<\/div>\n
information online, data privacy is taking on greater importance.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
<\/div>\n
“Data privacy relates to how a piece of information\u2014or data\u2014should be handled based on its relative importance.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“In the digital age, we typically apply the concept of data privacy to critical personal information, also known as personally identifiable information (PII)<\/div>\n
and personal health information (PHI).<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
“Online privacy is the level of privacy protection an individual has while connected to the Internet. It covers the amount of online security available for personal and financial data, communications, and preferences.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n
<\/div>\n
Dadik charged individuals to use their various platforms in creating awareness on how people can stay safe on internet particularly female journalists whom she said are more prone to threat.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Technology is now part of our lives, therefore the need to keep ourselves safe online. She emphasized.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

The one day training she informed is a step down on earlier received training under the #KeepOurFemaleJournalistsSafeOnline project\u00a0organized by the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), supported by\u00a0Association for Progressive Communications.<\/div>\n
