ASUP to FG: Answer Our Demands or Face Indefinite Strike<\/div>\n

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has called on the federal government to look into their demands or face Indefinite strike\u00a0 action.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The union had earlier given government one month notice which expired 4th of May with no result.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This was revealed to journalists by ASUP Chairman , Kaduna Chapter, Comrade Mohammed Mohammed in a press conference held at ASUP secretariat in Kaduna , today Monday, 23rd 2022.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\"\"<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to him, the NEC met on the 11th of May and delibrated on the elapsed ultimatum and directed that 2weeks strike commenced with effect from 16th May as a window for government to meet up its demands failure of which it will commence on indefinite strike.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

“You may recall that the one month ultimatum given to the government by<\/div>\n
our great Union expired on the 4th of May, 2022 and is the norm that the<\/div>\n
union’s National Executive Council (NEC) reconvened to review the response of the Government within the time line of the ultimatum.<\/div>\n
Thus, NEC met on the 11th of May, 2022 and deliberated on the elapsed<\/div>\n
ultimatum.<\/div>\n

“Following exhaustive deliberations on the update as outlined above, the<\/div>\n
emergency meeting of the Union’s National Executive Council has resolved<\/div>\n
that members should withdraw their services in a 2 week industrial action<\/div>\n
with effect from Monday, 16th of May, 2022.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\n
<\/div>\n
Lamenting on the effects the indefinite action would have on students should the government refuses to meet their demands, the Chairman said,<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“We were a week into our exams and as soon as we got the directive we had to put it on hold and now we have shut down the school.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\"\"<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Honestly, l must say It is an ill wind that blows no one good.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“We are deploying this medium to equally appeal to members of the public<\/div>\n
to prevail on the Government to do the needful within the 2 weeks period<\/div>\n
so as to avoid an indefinite shutdown of the Sector. He stated.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The following are status of the items in dispute.<\/div>\n

“Non release of the approved revitalization fund for the sector.<\/div>\n
Approved N15bn is yet to released 11 months after Approval by<\/div>\n
the President.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0Non release and payment of Promotion Arrears.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0Non release of the reviewed normative<\/div>\n
instruments for Institution\/Management and programs accreditation: The document is currently awaiting approval of the Management of NBTE. This<\/div>\n
document is expected to provide a framework to address nonpayment of salaries in state owned Institutions, non compliance with approved retirement age, non deployment of approved salary<\/div>\n
structures, poor governance structure as well as other issues affecting standards particularly in state owned Polytechnics.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Sustained infractions in implementation of the provisions of the Federal Polytechnics Act as amended in 2019.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Delay in the appointment of rectors: The appointment process in Kaduna Polytechnic, Federal Polytechnic Mubi, Federal Polytechnic Offa, and Federal Polytechnic Ekowa continues to linger on despite Completion of the processes.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Non Release of Arrears of CONTISS 15 Migration for the Lower Cadre.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Non release of the scheme of service for Polytechnics: Since 2017, the Sector has been struggling with a review process for the scheme of service and conditions Of service in use.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Continued Victimization of Union Officers: Our officials in IMT Enugu<\/div>\n
and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo still remain out of job.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Continued Arm twisting of Members in Colleges of Agriculture by the ARCN.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Reacting to the shut down and proposed ASUP indefinite strike action should government fails to meet their demand, the students have this to say.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

This strike will cause more delay in my stay in this instutution. It will also make the students forget what they have been taught because the studies is not continuous. The ASSU,\u00a0 have been on strike now for over four months and the students are at home doing nothing. This kind of strike also makes some of the students to have negative thoughts. We are talking of fraud and most of the schools now are on strike which tends to make the students vulnerable. Instead of thinking of their studies, they will be thinking of ways to get money. Some, dangerous means.<\/div>\n
We are praying that government looks into the issues presented by the staff so that studies can resume.<\/div>\n

“I must say, we the students are not happy with this strike. But as far as it is something that will be benefitable to us when the government does the needful, we have no choice.<\/div>\n
