Women And Youth Empowerment Network ,( WOYAEN)\u00a0 has organized town hall meeting for Persons With Disabilities (PWDS) and stakeholders on the community action for social Inclusion In Politics and Political leadership in Kaduna.<\/div>\n

The event which brought together 16 communities in Chukun Local Government Areas of Kaduna state was meant to give the group the sense of belonging and at the same time<\/div>\n
create a fora for a healthy interaction on matters relating to their general well being.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

The Executive Director, Women And Youth Awareness Empowerment Network (WOYAEN) Dr. Mrs. Rakiya Shonekan in her opening remark had stressed on the importance of the group partaking in the 2023 electoral process as that will pave way for Inclusiveness\u00a0 in governance.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Their active participation in the electoral process and governance she described as very key.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“l am pleased and highly honoured to welcome you all to this special episode of the WE – YOU PRO Project.<\/div>\n
This meeting has great significance because it is premise on the political calendar of our nation, building up to the<\/div>\n
2023 general elections.<\/div>\n
An active involvement of key project target group – persons with disabilities in the electoral process and governance.”<\/div>\n

Dr\u00a0 Rakiya urged them to obtain their voters cards, and be up to date in every electoral process as that will assure their Inclusiveness.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Speaking,\u00a0 she informed that WOYAEN\u00a0 was established in 2005.\u00a0 Its activities have recorded measurable level of successes and its mission and vision statement pursued to the letter.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The meeting objectives according to her is to establish shared understanding for community level self -administration and self-help groups.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
To sensitize persons with disabilities (PWDS) on government welfare programs for disabled persons and how they can key into it.<\/div>\n
\"\"<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Also, to sensitize them on INEC’s provision for disability persons in voting as well as provide them with platform to participate in the CVR exercise.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Since their work is enormous, the organization is partnering with some relevant persons and organizations. One of such organizations being ActionAid Nigeria which is funded by UKAid.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“ActionAid Nigeria and UKAid saw it fit to partners on this project which they have titled, the Campaign for Inclusion of Women and Young People in Politics and Political Processes(We-YOU Pro) Project with the theme \u201cHope, Action and Progress for Women and Youth<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The projects she informed are being implemented for the purpose of creating awareness, sensitizing as well as promoting the involvement of the socially excluded\/maginalised citizens.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Recalling their achievements which she said was evidence in the participation of some key stakeholders at various stages of their activities, Dr. Rakiya however lamented the fact that women and youth\u00a0 collectively make up about 70 percent of the nation’s population, and yet they occupy less than 5 percent of leadership structures in the society.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Their Mission statement she assured of advocating for, and promoting good governance, human rights, equal opportunities and an inclusive society; and Vision statement of\u00a0 \u201cseeing a society where every girl, boy, and man irrespective of their challenge is valued, empowered and invested to succeed and advancing humanity \u201c will be vigorously pursued.<\/div>\n

Because their activities are enormous the organization has collaborated with relevant organizations and persons in making their dream achievable. She added.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Dr. Rakiya in her charge called on the PWDS to make their presence felt in the ongoing political dispensation and the media to help disseminate information with regards to their activities.<\/div>\n

“We will be counting on all of us present especially the media team to further inspire actions toward consolidation of the gains we have recorded and expansion of the impact to the buildup of the 2023 elections.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Social justice is a fundamental human right and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that it is engendered in all aspects of human endeavor particularly in leadership representation.” She stressed.<\/div>\n

Speaking, former Chairman,\u00a0 Joint National Association Of Persons With Disability (JONAP),\u00a0 Mallam Rilwan Muhammed, a one time Special Assistant on NGOs and Students Affairs under former Vice President Namadi Sambo then Governor of Kaduna state called on persons with disabilities to exert their worth. There is ability in disability he said saying, there are many talented persons amongst them but are not given the opportunity to proof their worth. He cited example of one Mercy Daniel who seek for the position of counsellorship despite the fact that she was qualified but deprived on the basis of her disposition.<\/div>\n
He however commended the efforts of some state governments who find it necessary to create opportunities for some of them.<\/div>\n
Mallam Rilwan lauded the recent move by both Houses of Rep. and Senate on the amendment to increase their retirement age.<\/p>\n
The bill, sponsored by Babajimi Benson from Lagos, seeks to increase the retirement age from 65 to 70 years or 40 years of service, whichever comes first.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The bill is also seeking to ensure that the Chairman of the National Commission for Persons Living with Disability is someone also living with a disability.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Adding his voice, pastor Monday encouraged his members to have faith in God and themselves saying, they are special people before God. He lamented that a lot of promises are usually made by government which are never fulfilled.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Persons with disabilities are supposed to be accorded special treatments just as it is being done in other parts of the world.<\/div>\n
They have constitutional rights which many of them are not aware of , one of such is where the constitution gives them 20%\u00a0 recognition in any filling station they find themselves.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Dr. Pastor Monday in his words of encouragement charged his members to remove from them all forms of inferiority complex and make it to the top. According to him,\u00a0 “I have taken the disadvantage of my disability to get to the top”.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Since it was an open fora for the PWDS to interact, comments on the need for Inclusion in policy making was stressed. They called for more accessibility to public places. Building they said should have specifications that will take care of persons with disabilities. Building permits should be given to only those with such specification.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
All Progressive Congress Disabled Leader, Hon\u00a0 Bawa Kajuru in his encouraging words enjoined them to join politics as a way of seeking for recognition.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
On the other hand, speaking from the perception of the youth, Mallam Abubakar is of the believe that there is nothing like social Inclusion in terms of political participation. All that is being said he described as mare lip service.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

He urged government to earmark some seats for persons with disabilities just as it is being done in other outside countries.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Earlier, the Head of Programs, Women and Youth, Ime Thomas had explained that part of the objectives of the meeting was to at the end of the interactive session put in place a steering committee.<\/div>\n

The steering committee will be made up of representatives from different communities that will help chart a way forward with regards to activities of the PWDs.<\/div>\n

Explaining further, Thomas said the essence of selecting representatives from different communities is to help facilitate each community’s activities at the state level. The coordinators will serve as their eyes at the state level where decisions on crucial matters will be jointly taken.<\/div>\n

He urged those selected to take their assignment with all seriousness for the progress of the group.<\/div>\n

Chairman, JONAP Kaduna, Mallam Suleiman Abdul Azeez in his charge called on members to remain ressiliant in their fight for Inclusiveness.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He charged them to be law abiding saying by being abiding citizens they will have the strength to fight their course because there is wisdom in togetherness.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mallam Suleiman emphasized on the need for individuals to have their voters card because that is the only way they can bring about change.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He commended the initiative of WOYAEN<\/div>\n
for providing them with such a fora where larger communities had to come together to interact.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

“We are actually happy with this initiative for it helps us to come across our members in various communities. We pray that this extends to the 23 LGAs in Kaduna.”<\/div>\n

Communities present included,<\/div>\n
Angwan Yelwa,\u00a0 Ungwan Romi, Gonin gora, Trikania, Mararaban Rido and Janruwa.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Speaking through Zoom, both the Executive Secretary, Kaduna state Disability Affairs Board Aliyu Haruna Yakase and the Executive Director, Women Disability Group Hajiya Risikat Muhammed brought to fore issues of paramount concerns.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to the Executive Secretary,<\/div>\n
Disability Affairs Board, Kaduna state government he said has put in place some programmes to better the lives of persons with disabilities in the state.<\/div>\n
Such efforts he said includes government making sure that their rights are not violated.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Also, there are three additional acquisition centres now in the state and the one at Jaba is to be commissioned in the next three months.<\/div>\n
.<\/div>\n
Disability Affairs Board is liasing with other ministries on dissabity related issues. He further informed.<\/div>\n
Government he stressed has made giant stride is in the area of support of N50.<\/div>\n
Yakase urged them to remain calm while assuring them of better things to come.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
On her part, the Executive Director, Women Disability Group, Hajiya Risikat Muhammed said women with disabilities are not finding it easy exerting their worth in the society. They are being stigmatized on the basis of not only being a woman but disabled. They are faced with two issues. She noted.<\/div>\n
According to Hajiya Risikat, women are not given the space to strive by their male counterparts, even in the political scene. She urged them not to relent in their strive while pleading that they get their voters cards because that is their power in the forthcoming 2023 elections.<\/div>\n

“If you say they are not carrying you along, are you associating with them?<\/div>\n
Join different parties. Be a member, not a follower.” She encouraged.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
There were also representatives of traditional leaders, security agencies who gave their words.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Speaking on behalf of the traditional leaders, Alhaji Danjuma Barde commended the good work of the organization while he on behalf of the community leaders assured their readiness to assist in their course.<\/div>\n

Representatives of the Civil defense and police both educated PWDS on some opportunities at their disposal which they can tap particularly from the civil defense corps organization where there there is an existing department created to tackle disability related issues.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

To ease their problems on voters registration, viz-a-vis issues of transfers, members of WOYAEN were on ground to<\/div>\n
