Persons living with disability have called on the government to give them equal opportunities as they have lot of talents amongst them.<\/p>\n
It also draws the attention of government to persons with disability law which is yet to yield positive results as the implementation still remains a mirage. It urged the government to fulfill its promise by making it work.<\/p>\n
This call was made during a one day peace awareness program coordinated by Dr. Micah Sabi (visually impaired) from Center for People with Disability, Kaduna supported by Legasi Initiative.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The event Dr. Micah explained has become necessary in order for them to contribute their quota towards ensuring peace.<\/p>\n
The issue of insecurity anywhere in the world cannot be achieved if it is not tackled holistically therefore, the need to join hands by creating peace awareness.<\/p>\n
Moreso, persons living with disability\u00a0 are always at risk whenever there is unrest thus, the need to educate them on protective measures in terms of danger,\u00a0 raising alarm, using the ‘early warning, early response’ system.<\/p>\n
Early warning and early response systems are intended to identify and analyze conflict trends, alert to conflict risk, inform decision-making and initiate timely responses to prevent violent conflict.<\/p>\n
Commending the system which he lamented has been poorly managed,<\/p>\n Dr. Micah cited an unpleasant incidence whereby one of its members could not get assistance despite the ‘early warning, early response’ system.<\/p>\n The group has also raised concern on the need for government to give those living with disability the opportunity to contribute in the affairs of the nation.<\/p>\n They are being denied opportunities. They are seeking for Improvement in respect of social status of disability.<\/p>\n Persons with disability he stated\u00a0 constitutes over one billion of the world population.<\/p>\n “With Nigeria having “over 27million\u00a0 population of persons living with disability,\u00a0 it\u00a0is not a proportion to be ignored. The population is about 2 to 3; countries in Africa. This is why we have decided to create awareness so as to have peace.<\/p>\n \u00a0“We need a lot of awareness particularly, by the media to help persons with disability in creating awareness in order that the law can take off properly. It should be implemented and be seen to\u00a0 be effectively working.<\/p>\n “Persons with disability, we cannot keep quite, we need to give our holistic support and opinion so that we can move forward.<\/p>\n Also speaking, Buhari Usman from the Nigerian Association of the blind said the five percent that they are entitled to is not a privilege but a right saying, government should do something in ensuring its implementation.<\/p>\n Representatives of the police commissioner and other agencies were present to assist in creating awareness and to maintain peace .<\/p>\n \u00a0.<\/p>\n \n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Persons with Disability: Dr. Micah Sabi goes tough, draws Government’s attention to equal opportunities for PWD’s . This simply means, we don’t even believe in early warning.<\/div>\n<\/div>\nThis blind man\u00a0 is alive today by the grace of God. This is what we are going through.”<\/div>\n<\/div>\nThe group is calling for investigation on the chunk of money the government has spent on the early warning, early response system which is not functioning.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n“Years back, the government of this very country approved over ten billion naira for the issue of early warning, early response.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n“You are to call 112 in times of danger for quick response, for assistance but for the past years if one calls the number, what you hear is unpleasant noise.<\/div>\n\n“We are so concerned about that N10b that was approved. Who ate that N10b that 112 is not working?\u00a0 If the 112 were to be working, we would have moved to the next level.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nStill lamenting,<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nOther countries like America, immediately you call 119, America answers thinking something bad is happening to their citizen in that country. <\/p>\n“Government should take our affairs seriously, give us recognition, give us equal opportunities.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nSpeaking on persons with disability law,<\/div>\nthat despite all the promises by government, it has fully not taken off. However, he commended government’s efforts for setting up a commission which he described as a step forward. All the same, the implementation of the law still remains\u00a0 a mirage for now. He said.<\/div>\n“What I am trying to say is that, government should know that the issues of persons with disability is no longer a welfare issue. It is no longer an issue of privilege. It is a right.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n“No matter what,\u00a0 whether you have ten eyes, 13 ears, somebody who has no eyes and he is living, according to universal declaration of human rights, article 1 of 10th December, 1949, it states that we are all equal in dignity of rights. We should be given equal opportunities.”<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/newsreservoir.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_20230825_114224_914-300x225.jpg\")
<\/p>\nHe called for equal treatment of their members in agencies and ministries.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n“At least give them the opportunity to play their role in some of the agencies and organizations.”<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\u00a0Their members he said also go through some challenges in higher institutions.<\/div>\nSome universities do not give persons with disability the opportunity to choose courses of their choices but restricted to courses based on the choice of the universities.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n“They are given courses like special education, psychology, some given\u00a0 political science, just any course.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n“We are calling with a strong voice to\u00a0 government that, please and please, let them accept our people by giving them courses in the universities based on their choices.
