{"id":17003,"date":"2023-08-30T09:35:22","date_gmt":"2023-08-30T09:35:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsreservoir.com\/?p=17003"},"modified":"2023-08-30T09:40:51","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T09:40:51","slug":"coup-in-gabon-army-takes-over-power-dissolves-all-institutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsreservoir.com\/?p=17003","title":{"rendered":"Coup in Gabon: Army takes over power, dissolves all institutions\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"auto\">\u00a0Coup in Gabon: Army takes over power, dissolves all institutions<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Zainab Tanimu<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Kaduna, Northwest Nigeria<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Army officers have appeared on national television in Gabon to say they have taken power.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">They said they were annulling the results of Saturday&#8217;s election, in which President Ali Bongo was declared the winner.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">The electoral commission said Mr Bongo had won just under two-thirds of the votes in an election the opposition argued was fraudulent.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">His overthrow would end his family&#8217;s 53-year hold on power in Gabon.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Twelve soldiers were reported to have appeared on television announcing they were cancelling the results of the election.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Vanguard reports that during the announcement, AFP journalists heard gunfire ring out in the Gabonese capital, Libreville.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">While announcing the cancellation of the results one of the soldiers said \u201call the institutions of the republic\u201d had been dissolved.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the current regime\u201d, one of the soldiers said on TV channel Gabon 24, adding that he was speaking on behalf of the \u201cCommittee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions\u201d.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cTo this end, the general elections of 26 August 2023 and the truncated results are cancelled,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cAll the institutions of the republic are dissolved: the government, the Senate, the National Assembly and the Constitutional Court,\u201d he added, announcing the closure of the country\u2019s borders \u201cuntil further notice\u201d.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Among the soldiers were members of the Republican Guard as well as soldiers of the regular army and police officers<\/div>\n<p dir=\"auto\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Coup in Gabon: Army takes over power, dissolves all institutions Zainab Tanimu Kaduna, Northwest Nigeria Army officers have appeared on national television in Gabon to say they have taken power.
