War on Gaza: South African Lawyers Seek Justice, Say, lsrael Committing Genocide … urges ICJ to halt lsrael military operations in Gaza Zainab Tanimu Kaduna<\/p>\n

The United Nations\u2019 top court has heard South Africa\u2019s case that Israel\u2019s military assault on the Gaza Strip amounts to genocide against Palestinians. This, Israel has denied and dismissed as “atrocious and preposterous.” South African Justice Minister Ronald Lamola, center, spoke to the press Thursday, before the International Court of Justice in The Hague on the first day of hearings in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel.<\/p>\n

South Africa is initially asking the International Court of Justice to order an immediate halt to Israel\u2019s offensive in Gaza. A team of South Africa lawyers argued before the International Court of Justice that Israel\u2019s actions, including its bombardment and siege of the enclave, showed its intent to commit genocide against Palestinians.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said: “Our opposition to the ongoing slaughter of the people of Gaza has driven us as a country to approach the ICJ.”<\/div>\n

\u201cNothing will stop the suffering except an order from this court,\u201d Adila Hassim, one of the South African lawyers, said during the country\u2019s presentation, which focused on the soaring death toll in Gaza, the catastrophic humanitarian crisis and calls by Israeli officials for the death and displacement of Palestinian<\/div>\n

Israeli President Isaac Herzog called the accusations “atrocious and preposterous”.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“We will be in the International Court of Justice and we will present proudly our case of using self-defence\u2026 under humanitarian law,” he said.<\/div>\n

Unlike the International Criminal Court (ICC), the ICJ cannot prosecute individuals for crimes such as genocide, but its opinions carry weight with the UN and other international institutions.<\/div>\n

The hearing is fixed for today Friday.<\/div>\n

Gaza Health Ministry says more than 23,469 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strike since October, 7. Mostly women and children were killed. More than 59,600 have been injured, and thousands more are missing and presumed dead.<\/div>\n

South Africa lawyers say Istreal is deliberately imposing conditions on Gaza that cannot sustain life.<\/div>\n

They are asking the court to impose provisional measures including ordering Israel to halt military operations.<\/div>\n

The South Africa legal team has accused Israeli of using starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza.<\/div>\n

Israelis intent to destroy it said has been nurtured at the highest level of state.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Israeli military officials say at least 189 soldiers have been killed during the country’s ground invasion of Gaza, which came after 1,200 people were killed and about 240 hostages were seized after Hamas launched multi pronged attacks on Israel on Oct. 7.<\/div>\n
