“It is actually a wisdom of him in recognizing the challenges that this pose not only to the environment but to the social economic situation of the people of Kaduna because the issue of climate change is a serious issue that affects virtually all aspects of human life.<\/div>\n
The experience and articulate aide, speaking on his mandate said.<\/p>\n
“My mandate basically is to create awareness on climate change, its impact and possible measures that can be taken.<\/p>\n
The issue of climate change he has described as contemporary which needs to be taken seriously.<\/p>\n
“Climate change is a concept which academically, is a change in weather matter over a long period.<\/p>\n
“It reflects the variations in the average daily weather conditions such as temperature, humidity, rainfall and sunshine of a location over an extended period.<\/p>\n
Explaining further,<\/p>\n
“As greenhouse gas emissions blanket the Earth, they trap the sun’s heat. This leads to global warming and climate change. The world is now warming faster than at any point in recorded history. Warmer temperatures over time are changing weather patterns and disrupting the usual balance of nature.<\/p>\n
“Climate is part of nature, nature does not change sudden but gradually changes in weather pattern over a period of time.<\/p>\n
Last year was regarded as the hottest year ever all over the globe . He stated.<\/p>\n
Climate change occurs in two ways. Firstly occurs as a natural phenomenon and that caused by human activities.<\/p>\n
Nigeria has a tropical climate with 2 distinct seasons: wet and dry seasons.<\/p>\n
For example, the southern part of Nigeria has a longer period of rainy season (March to November) than the Northern part (May to September).<\/p>\n
Dry season is prevalent in the north coupled with high temperatures that may reach an average monthly value of 38 degrees celsius. In the north, there is the<\/p>\n
harmattan wind, which is a dry and hot wind,which blows longer than it does in southern Nigeria.<\/p>\n
Still explaining,<\/p>\n
Those countries that emit green house gases, they use mitigation but that which the country is taking is that of adaptation. “We are more vulnerable.” He said.<\/p>\n
The question is, since climate change is as a result of green house gases being emitted into the space and Nigeria does not emit such gases, why then is Nigeria concerned about climate change?<\/p>\n
Although natural hazards like volcanic eruptions contribute to climate change, scientists have now discovered that in Nigeria, certain human activities are also responsible.<\/div>\n

Emission of greenhouse gases from vehicles: Some vehicles emit greenhouse gases such as sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide from their exhaust.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The burning of hydrocarbon products: This releases carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Another one is that of deforestation: This refers to cutting down trees, usually for agriculture. Trees form a protective barrier against the heat from the sun and cutting them down affects this purpose.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
There is also the industrial emissions: Industrial activities and equipment produce greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere.<\/div>\n
Climate change in Nigeria threatens economic growth in sectors dependent on climatic conditions. Thus the need to take adequate steps in preventing the occurrence.<\/p>\n
“For instance in the southern part of the country where they experience sea waves, the adverse effect is flood. This affects the agricultural mainstay of the people, people are forced to migrate and in some instances cause draught and causing untold suffering on the lives of the citizens.<\/p>\n
Commending Kaduna state government’s initiative and fore- sightedness in the fight against climate change, he said.<\/p>\n
Kaduna state is about the 3rd or 4th populous state in Nigeria and high level of poverty which makes it vulnerable.<\/p>\n
“This singular action by the\u00a0 governor to put in place measures to mitigate on climate change demonstrates governor Uba Sani’s commitment in securing the environmental well being of the people of the state.<\/p>\n
This brought to focus the mining activities going on in the state and what the Kaduna state government is doing to ensure that harm is not caused to the environment.<\/p>\n
Responding , “efforts are being made to ensure sustainable and orderly mining.<\/p>\n

“There is what is called sustainable mining practice. After mining an area, you re – clean that space, by either filling the place or planting some species of trees to reclean the diversity of that place in order not to cause damage to the environment.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The governor in order to sanitize the mining sector, he informed has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a company in Qatar.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Governor Uba Sani, when he traveled to Qatar, signed an MOU with an organization called Trobec international and Trobec international is coming to invest up to 2billion US dollars in the mining sector such that infrastructures will be built around investment in the mining sector.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“The company will be involved in sustainable mining practices which he is going to monitor.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
For successful implementations of policies Yusuf called for understanding and cooperation on the part of development partners and people of Kaduna state in taking actions in mitigating and building resilience around climate change.<\/div>\n

Presently, that there is a policy on ground that if one cuts down a tree, you plant 2, 3 trees in replacement.<\/div>\n

Kaduna State climate change policy is about to be signed. He informed.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
For further precautionary measures there is the introduction of the use of energy saving stove which he said the government will look into its affordability. Also, some women are gainfully receiving training.<\/div>\n

To show the seriousness of the state government, Kaduna state was represented at the COP28 .<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
That Nigeria is a signatory to the outcome of the conference where there was an agreement to \u201ctransition away from fossil fuels\u201d as part of the global stocktake.<\/div>\n

All hands he stressed should be on deck to achieving the 47% reduction in green house gas emission.<\/div>\n
