Kaduna State Government has intervened in the ongoing industrial dispute between Kaduna Electric and its workers\u2019 union, which has resulted in power outage in all its franchise states for four days.<\/p>\n
The Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Balarabe who hosted the meeting at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House on Thursday, pleaded with the union to restore electricity to consumers as soon as possible because the outage has impacted negatively across all sectors.<\/p>\n
Dr Balarabe implored the management and the union to find a common ground to ensure the resolution\u00a0 of\u00a0 their differences,\u00a0 as\u00a0 the lack of power has badly affected homes, businesses and with attendant\u00a0 security implications.<\/p>\n
She further said that the management and the workers of Kaduna Electric need each other and that they should continue to hold dialogue on a regular\u00a0 basis even when the present impasse has been resolved.<\/p>\n
Speaking earlier, Comrade Wisdom Chidi Nwachukwu, the National Vice President (Distribution) of the National Union of Electricity Employees said that the union is not against the downsizing of workers but wants due process to be followed and all their\u00a0 entitlements paid.<\/p>\n
Comrade Nwachukwu pointed out that both the union, management and workers of Kaduna Electric are members of the same family but as the workers\u2019 representatives, they want the management to follow laid down procedure\u00a0 \u00a0in the pruning down of the workforce.<\/p>\n
The union leader promised that he and other officials will communicate the Deputy Governor\u2019s plea to their headquarters, pledging\u00a0 that the matter will be resolved soon.<\/p>\n
In his presentation, the Managing Director of Kaduna Electric, Malam Umar Abubakar Hashidu, said that the management is looking at efficiency, progress and sustainability of the company, clarifying that it\u00a0 was 444 workers that were laid off.<\/p>\n
According to him, the company will be unable to meet basic obligations like payment of salaries and may ultimately fold up, if action was not taken by the management.<\/p>\n
Malam Umar also said that the two parties will hold another round of meetings with a third party, promising that the matter will be resolved soon.<\/p>\n
The meeting was attended by the senior Government officials like the Secretary to Kaduna State Government, Dr AbdulKadir Muazu Meyere, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Alhaji Sani Liman Kila, Special Adviser on Research, Documentation and Strategy, Mr Fabia Okoye and the Managing Director of Kaduna Power Supply Company, Engr Idris Aminu Idris.<\/p>\n
Earlier today, a group under the auspices of Concerned Residents of Kaduna had petitioned Governor Uba Sani over the prolonged power outage in the state following the strike by workers of Kaduna Electric.<\/p>\n

They demanded government intervention as the four days strike by the workers have caused untold suffering on the consumers.<\/p>\n
In the letter of protest by the citizens in the state, made available by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ibraheem Musa, and the Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Mock Kure, to journalists on Thursday, the aggrieved residents while commending the governor, Senator Uba Sani for his efforts in restoring the glory of the state seeked government intervention.<\/p>\n
The letter reads in part,<\/p>\n
\u201cYour Excellency, while we acknowledge the challenges faced by the electricity distribution company, it is unfair that ordinary citizens, who diligently pay their electricity bills, continue to suffer due to poor power supply,\u201d stressing that \u201cmany hardworking individuals and small businesses depend on electricity to earn a living, and prolonged outages are crippling their means of survival.<\/p>\n
They however expressed concern over the unhealthy relationship between the striking workers and the management while calling for an understanding and an end to the strike.<\/p>\n
“We are deeply concerned about the recent developments within the power sector, particularly the dismissal of staff, which should not translate to punishing innocent consumers. We implore you to urgently call Kaduna Electric to order and ensure that electricity is fairly and adequately distributed to all.<\/p>\n
\u201cYour swift intervention will bring relief to thousands of Kaduna residents who rely on power for their daily sustenance. We trust in your leadership and commitment to the welfare of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n
