Kaduna L-PRES Project: Livestock Farmers, Community Leaders Receive Training on Conflict Management<\/p>\n

Livestock Farmers and community leaders in Kaduna state have received training on how best to mitigate conflicts.<\/p>\n

The training under the Livestock Productivity & Resilience Support Project, (L-PRES) offered participants strategies with which to handle and resolve conflicts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Chairman, State\u00a0 Steering\u00a0 Committee L-PRES, Alhaji Abba Umar speaking through the Secretary state steering committee on conflict resolution, Amwe Akos explained the importance of the training while urging participants to use the opportunity provided to advance themselves.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

With the knowledge on conflict resolution some clashes could be avoided. He gave instances of<\/div>\n
herders farmers clashes which could be reduced to the minimal level through restrain and the intervention of community leaders.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Where there is no peace, there will be no development. He stressed.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Amwe noted that farmers sometimes are\u00a0 faced with some natural disaster which could be mitigated if well handled.Thus, the importance of the training .<\/div>\n

“We are in a situation whereby we have a lot of environmental difficulties and that of climate change.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He is of the hope that the training which cuts across the senatorial zones in Kaduna state will bring a great relieve as participants are expected to step down the knowledge they have acquired during the training for the benefit of others and community at large.<\/div>\n

“These people here are representative of various committees. They are here.\u00a0 They are representative of the various committees to go through this capacity building training. They are expected to step down what they have learnt when they get back to their various communities.”<\/div>\n

According to him, the L-PRES project in Kaduna has value chains. “We have the cattle, Sheep and goat, piggery and poultry. This could be different in other states.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The steering committee he said is set up by L-PRES and that the project itself is funded by the world bank. The project is meant to improve productivity in the livestock sector as well as provide resilience against shock.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

The fora appreciated the world bank, federal government and governor Uba Sani for their support.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Speaking, the State Project Coordinator L-PRES Dr. Salisu Shittu Ashiru in a speech delivered by the component head of Conflict Mitigation,\u00a0 L-PRES, Musa Aba Adamu charged participants to give their all during the training so as to become more educated.<\/div>\n

The coordinator he explained is passionate about peace building. The\u00a0 address reads in part:<\/div>\n

“On behalf of Kaduna L-PRES, l am honored to welcome you to this capacity building training on conflict mitigation strategies.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Today, we gathered here to address one of the pressing challenges of our time, that is conflict.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He described conflict as a worrisome issue that has negative effects not only on individuals but communities and the nation at large.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0Shittu charged stakeholders and participants to use the opportunity at the training to better their lots.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
“This capacity building training is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to mitigate conflicts in your personal and professional lives. Conflict is not inevitable, with the right skills, knowledge and attitude, we can mitigate conflict and build a more peaceful and resilient community.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Such skills like knowing the root cause of a conflict, the ability to give listening ears while mediating and that of negotiation are key to achieving success.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
He stressed.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Speaking, Alhaji Yusuf Bida in his paper presentation, on the techniques for conflict prevention, effective communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement strategies itemized some qualities expected.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He enumerated some strategies to be used in ensuring positive results.\u00a0 Mediator must possess some good qualities. Among such qualities are, he should be independent minded, resolute and very forthright. He should be patient, open to positive criticism. Amongst all, he should be God fearing.<\/div>\n

Contributing, Hajiya Asmau Adamu, Deputy Director Forestry and resources under the ministry of environment, member conflict resolution sees the training as going to enhance peaceful co-existence among the farmers and herders.<\/div>\n

Her ministry she stated is doing a lot in that direction.<\/div>\n
“We have our staff in the LG Areas who monitor what goes on with regards to conflicts.\u00a0 They serve as our links and where they find issues difficult to solve, such is referred to the state.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mrs Christiana Atama, one of the participants, a farner. “We are here for the training. We open our ears and eyes and we should make use of what we learn here in order to live in peace with the farmers and herders.<\/div>\n
She is into the production of millet, soya beans and maize.\u00a0 lamenting the damage being done by herders on people’s farm.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A community leader,\u00a0 Alhaji lbrahim Sarkin Gabas who also was a\u00a0 participant commended the government and organizers of the training for putting such programme in place.,\u00a0 “Farmers and herders are like twins.
