Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially withdrawn his membership from the New Nigeria People\u2019s Party (NNPP), attributing the decision to prolonged internal conflicts and a desire to protect the overall interest of Kano State.<\/p>\n

The development was disclosed in a statement released on Friday and signed by the Governor\u2019s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.<\/p>\n

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf conveyed his resignation in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area, with the resignation taking effect from Friday, January 23, 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cI write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People\u2019s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party, with effect from Friday 23rd January 2026.\u201d<\/div>\n

In the letter, the Governor expressed gratitude to the party for providing him with the political platform and support that shaped his political journey since 2022.<\/p>\n

“\u201cI remain sincerely appreciative of the opportunity given to me by the party, its leadership, and members across Kano State to be part of its political journey since 2022, as well as the support, goodwill, and cooperation extended to me during my time in the party.\u201d<\/p>\n

He acknowledged the encouragement and cooperation received from the party\u2019s leadership and members across Kano State during his time with the NNPP.<\/p>\n

Governor Yusuf explained that persistent leadership disputes and ongoing court cases within the party have continued to destabilize its structure at both state and national levels. He noted that the unresolved disagreements have deepened divisions, weakened unity, and created uncertainty within the party.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stated that after careful consideration, he concluded that stepping away from the NNPP was in the best interest of the people of Kano State.<\/p>\n

The Governor emphasized that his decision was taken in good faith, without resentment, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and development in the state.<\/p>\n

The resignation is not limited to the Governor alone, as 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 Local Government Chairmen also exited the party alongside him.<\/p>\n

Acknowledging the resignation, the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, commended Governor Yusuf for his achievements in infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.<\/p>\n

While admitting the existence of unresolved internal crises within the party, he described Governor Yusuf as one of the NNPP\u2019s most outstanding governors and stated that the party had no choice but to accept his decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish to concur with His Excellency on the lingering crisis in our party, though we are trying our best to contain it, but we have no option than to accept the resignation of a one and most performing Governor of the NNPP.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement was signed by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano.<\/p>\n
