Independence: Uba Sani Frees 27 Inmates as Kaduna Clemency Beneficiaries Cross 500<\/p>\n

As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has granted clemency to 27 inmates in correctional facilities across the state, bringing the total number of beneficiaries of his administration\u2019s clemency interventions to more than 500.<\/p>\n

The latest intervention, which includes the release of eligible inmates as well as the payment of fines and compensation on behalf of others, forms part of the administration\u2019s restorative justice initiative aimed at giving deserving inmates a second chance while safeguarding the interests of victims.<\/p>\n

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, disclosed this in a statement issued in Kaduna, noting that the administration has committed more than \u20a6300 million towards the payment of fines and compensation for victims since Governor Sani assumed office in May 2023.<\/p>\n

According to Maiyaki, the intervention reflects the Governor\u2019s commitment to a justice system that combines accountability and public safety with rehabilitation, reconciliation and opportunities for deserving individuals to rebuild their lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence, Governor Uba Sani\u2019s intervention gives practical expression to the compassion and shared humanity upon which enduring communities are built,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Maiyaki added that the significance of clemency goes beyond the release of inmates, stressing that it also restores hope and provides a credible pathway towards responsible citizenship.<\/p>\n

Providing further details, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir James A. Kanyip, said the latest exercise continues Governor Sani\u2019s practice of extending clemency on significant national occasions, including New Year, Democracy Day and Independence Day.<\/p>\n

Kanyip explained that the prerogative of mercy is exercised through established processes, with due consideration given to accountability, rehabilitation and the responsibilities that come with freedom.<\/p>\n

He said the payment of fines and compensation adds a restorative dimension to the initiative by removing financial barriers that could keep deserving inmates in custody, while also taking into account the interests of victims.<\/p>\n

According to him, the scale and continuity of the interventions demonstrate that clemency under the present administration is not a one-off gesture but part of a broader approach to justice, rehabilitation and social reintegration.<\/p>\n

\u201cEach beneficiary represents a life offered another opportunity, a family reunited and a community with a renewed stake in successful reintegration. This commitment reflects the belief that justice serves society best when it also makes renewal possible,\u201d Kanyip said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed\u00a0 Maiyaki further assured that the administration would continue to pursue a balanced approach to justice\u2014one that safeguards victims and communities while creating room for deserving inmates to turn a new page and reintegrate meaningfully into society.<\/p>\n
