NUJ Says NO to FG’s Move to Regulate Social Media; Rejects Governors’ Forum Position on Payment of New Minimum Wage<\/div>\n

The National Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NEC yesterday during its\u00a0 meeting in Lokoja, Kogi State capital delibrated on some issues of paramount importance.<\/div>\n

Issues\u00a0 bordering on the state of the nation as well as that of the Council were brought to fore for discussion.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Amongst issues discussed with regards to the state of the nation were the recent plan by the Federal Government to regulate the social media operators in the country which the union vehemently objected to as such it said could lead to gagging the media.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0It called on the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed not to succumb to the pressure for the general well being of the profession.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The meeting however regreted and condemned the unhealthy situation whereby\u00a0 some social media influencers indiscriminately parade themslves as professionals and members of NUJ.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
An action which is begining to dent the image of the profession.\u00a0 It lamented.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Stringent measures it stated would be taken to curb this unacceptable situation while warning those involved in this practice to henceforth desist or face the wrath of the law.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The foral also had rejected the Governors’ Forum position on payment of the new minimum wage which states that governors would pay the minimum wage according to what they described as the financial standing of their respective states.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
NUJ however urge the governors to implement the Federal Government’s template as agreed upon with the NLC.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
On the state of the Union, NEC in session reviewed the current situation in the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN and set up a five man committee to reconcile the two factions in the crisis.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The NEC also suspended indefinitely the former President of the NUJ, Waheed Odusile, NUJ Vice President Zone C, Petrus Obi, National Vice Chairman Zone C of NAWOJ, Chibota Edozie and Ngozi Agbo for persistent anti-Union activities.<\/div>\n

COMMUNIOUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE MEETING OF THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (NEC) OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS (NUJ) HELD AT REVERTON HOTEL LOKOJA, KOGI STATE OCTOBER 31, 2019.<\/div>\n
The National Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists held its meeting in Lokoja, Kogi State with all the National Officers as well as Chairmen and Secretaries of State Councils in attendance, and came up with the following:<\/div>\n
STATE OF THE UNION<\/div>\n
NEC in session reviewed the current situation in the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN and set up a five man committee to reconcile the two factions in the crisis.<\/div>\n
NEC in session suspends indefinitely a former President of the NUJ, Waheed Odusile, NUJ Vice President Zone C, Petrus Obi, National Vice Chairman Zone C of NAWOJ, Chibota Edozie and Ngozi Agbo for persistent anti-Union activities.<\/div>\n
NEC in session approves the employment of two additional Assistant National Secretaries in addition to the offering of contract appointment to Mr Bamidele Gbemiga, who retired as Senior Assistant National Secretary.<\/div>\n
NEC in session also approves the use of centralized NUJ attendance registrar for State Councils to check sharp practices in the compilation of membership lists in States.<\/div>\n
NEC frowns at some social media Influencers who indiscriminately masquerade as professional journalists and members of the NUJ to desist from such acts or be reported to the Police.<\/div>\n
STATE OF THE NATION<\/div>\n
NEC in session calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare state of emergency on deplorable Federal Roads across the country especially Ajaokuta \u2013 Itobe road which links the South East and South-South to the FCT.<\/div>\n
NEC rejects in its entirety a step by the Federal Government to regulate social media operators in the country calling on the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed not to succumb to the temptation of restricting the social media which can easily lead to gagging the media.<\/div>\n
NEC in session appeals to the Federal Government, INEC, security agencies and political gladiators to ensure hitch \u2013 free electoral processes before, during and after the forthcoming Kogi and Bayelsa States elections.<\/div>\n
NEC also rejects Nigeria Governors\u2019 Forum position that they will pay new minimum wage according to what they describe as the financial standing of their respective states and urge them to implement the Federal Government\u2019s template as agreed upon with the NLC.<\/div>\n
NEC in session commends the Federal Government for the closure of the Nation\u2019s land borders and urge the FG to prevail on marketers and local producers not to hike prices of goods and services.<\/div>\n
NEC commends Kogi State government and the Kogi State Council of the Union for hosting the NEC in Lokoja.<\/div>\n
