Kaduna State Coordinator of Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support Project (APPEALS) \\\\,Dr. Yahaya Aminu\u00a0 said survey has shown that farmers incur 40% loss due to inappropriate post-harvest management and skills.<\/p>\n
He made the observation during a Demonstration programme on post-harvest loss, prevention for maize farmers organized by APPEALS held at Biye village,Giwa local government area of Kaduna State.<\/p>\n
Nigerian pilot reports that Resource persons were Agric experts drawn from National Agricultural Extension Research and Liason Service, NEARLS,ABU Zaria.<\/p>\n
The Coordinator explained that the demonstration training exercise was to educate and enlighten farmers on measures and strategies to prevent & minimize post-harvest losses.<\/p>\n
“It is our our strategy to improve the output and productivity of the farmers in Kaduna state.<\/p>\n
“APPEALS which is a World Bank assisted project is conducting the training in 3 clusters of 3 local government areas in the state: namely, Biye in Giwa, Yaskwake in Zaria and Yakasai in Soba local government areas.” he explained.<\/p>\n
Dr. Aminu said the training is part of the implementation process of the Agro processing, productivity enhancement and livelihood improvement support project to educate farmers on post-harvest loss reduction for maximum productivity.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that the project intend to improve productivity of Small and Medium Scale farmers as well as improve value addition along priority value chain which Kaduna has chosen three agro value chains for it’s farmers.<\/p>\n
“Kaduna state is among the 5 states selected for APPEALS programme of which each has selected 3 value chains.<\/p>\n
“Maize, Ginger and Dairy farming were the value chain chosen by Kaduna state being major farming activities carried out in the state.” he noted.<\/p>\n
Presenting a paper titled “Post-Harvest Loss\u201d, Engineer Abdulhakeem Lawal enjoined farmers to inculcate the habit of crop spacing, advising them to allocate 20-25 Centimeters space between crops during maize plantation.<\/p>\n
He said research has shown that crop spacing yields positive results and enhance bumper harvest.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mohammed Musa Jaliya of NEARLS,ABU Zaria who spoke on “Good Agricultural Practice on prevention of post-harvest loss enjoined maize farmers to always liaise with Agric extension workers at every step of their farm process.<\/p>\n
