Segun Awofadeji, Bauchi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>United Nations Children\u2019s Fund(UNICEF) has as part of its efforts to curtail the spread of measles and meningitis amongst children in Bauchi State, completed arrangement to vaccinate at least over two million children against the diseases across the state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A consultant with UNICEF Field Office in Bauchi, Al Amin Barrow disclosed this at a one- day orientation for journalists on the forthcoming Measles and Meningitis vaccination campaign coming up from 16 to 23 November 2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The consultant said that under five children and those not vaccinated are at the increased risk of contracting the diseases, stressing that, \u201cmeasles is a dangerous disease that kills children as it is contagious and meningitis is a disease associated with high mortality\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Barrow also said that the state is targeting over 1.2million children from age 9 to 59 months to be vaccinated against measles while the targeted clients for meningitis A is expected to be over 1.7 million children age 1 to 7 years will be vaccinated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>According to him, the disease affects babies, preschool children and young and if not treated can lead to brain damage, hearing loss or disability.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>While appealing to caregivers to take the opportunity the campaign will provide to vaccinate their children and wards against the diseases, the consultant said it is the best way to prevent children from dying from the disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Barrow also disclosed that the vaccination will run concurrently and all eligible age groups are to be vaccinated irrespective of previous immunization history.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The programme manager of the immunization, Dr Jibrin Umar, in his address said Meningitis A vaccine was in short supply which is why only children between age 1 to 7 will be vaccinated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He said the idea was to boost their immunity as most mortality and morbidity is within this age group.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>According him, the orientation is to solicit the media support to create awareness on the campaign. saying the two vaccinations were free and is also part of the state routine immunization scheduled.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THISDAY reports that the vaccination will take place at health facility, fixed posts, schools, motor parks and markets while only trained health workers will be used.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Immunization: UNICEF Completes Arrangements To Vaccinate Over Two Million Children Against Measles, Meningitis\u00a0In Bauchi From;
