This was announced by the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Hajj and Umrah on Monday.<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A statement from Saudi Arabia Ministry of Hajj and Umrah said the prevailing situation (COVID-19) pandemic has necessitated the cut on the number of pilgrims for this year’s hajj. Thus, the Kingdom has decided to hold hajj 2020 for different nationalities that resides in the KINGDOM of Saudi Arabia.<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
About 2.5 million pilgrims performed Hajj last year but the ongoing scale and spread of COVID-19 worldwide means people will not be able to travel to the Kingdom to take part.\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

The ministry said the decision had been made \u201cin light of continuation of the pandemic and the risks of Coronavirus spreading in crowded spaces and large gatherings.\u201d<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Part of the statement reads:<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cA very limited number of pilgrims from various nationalities who already reside in Saudi Arabia, would be able to perform it.<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“This decision is taken to ensure Hajj is performed in a safe manner from a public health perspective while observing all preventative measures and the necessary social distancing protocols.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Last year, more than 1.8 million pilgrims traveled to Saudi Arabia from abroad to take part.\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n

The Hajj ministry said this year the risk of transmitting the disease between countries and the increase in infections globally meant the risk was too high.<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The ministry said Saudi Arabia\u2019s top priority is to always enable Muslim pilgrims perform Hajj and Umrah safely and securely.<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Council of Senior Scholars said on Monday that it supported the Kingdom\u2019s decision to limit the number of pilgrims in order to preserve their health and safety.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Meanwhile, Egypt\u2019s Minister of Awqaf, Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa, said that in light of the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, his country also supports the Kingdom\u2019s decision to limit the number of pilgrims, based on nationalities as well.\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n
