{"id":5843,"date":"2020-07-18T13:48:39","date_gmt":"2020-07-18T13:48:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsreservoir.com\/?p=5843"},"modified":"2020-07-18T13:48:39","modified_gmt":"2020-07-18T13:48:39","slug":"controversy-over-waec-date-put-to-rest-as-nigeria-four-other-countries-decide-new-date","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsreservoir.com\/?p=5843","title":{"rendered":"Controversy Over\u00a0WAEC Date Put To Rest As Nigeria, Four Other Countries Decide New Date"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">Controversy Over\u00a0WAEC Date Put To Rest As Nigeria, Four Other Countries Decide New Date<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Zainab Tanimu<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Kaduna, North-West Nigeria<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The controversy over a conducive date for the\u00a0 conduct of the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) has been resolved as the federal government has decided to consult with other African countries for a feasible date.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, made this known in a statement made available by the Director of Information, Mr Ben Goong.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Federal Ministry of Education had on Friday met with officials of the Secondary School Certificate West African Examinations Council in order to put to rest controversy\u00a0generated between parents, state and federal government as a result of the Covid -19 Pandemic.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">According to the statement, government had resolved to consult with the following WAEC countries &#8211;<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Gambia \u2013 on a new date for the suspended West African Senior School Certificate Examinations meant to be taken by students in Senior Secondary School Class 3.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Chukwuemeka said, &#8220;having taken the painful but necessary decision not to reopen schools without necessary preparations to ensure the safety of students and teachers, the Federal Ministry of Education has continued consultations with stakeholders, and a mechanism to assess and monitor compliance shall be put in place.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;After July 29, consultations with relevant stakeholders would hold again to review the situation and decide on a specific date for reopening or otherwise. He said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Since Tuesday last week, the Minister emphasied, wide consultations have been going on as stakeholders, commissioners of education in all the states and the federal have been consulted.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Others consulted\u00a0 are\u00a0Vice-Chancellors of Universities, some state governors and development partners, the Association\u00a0of Private School Owners of Nigeria, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools; Provosts of Colleges of Education and\u00a0 Rectors of Polytechnics.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">The further stated that the ministry has rolled out guidelines for the reopening of schools, saying they must undertake \u201cself-assessment and send feedback to state ministries of education, not later than July 29, 2020.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The guidelines, the Minister said were drafted in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, the Education in Emergencies Working Group, and other stakeholders.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Among the guidelines released by the Education Ministry on Friday are availability of an ambulance and access to a testing or isolation or treatment centre, including the NCDC helpline and state government facilities.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div
