{"id":6125,"date":"2020-08-19T18:08:53","date_gmt":"2020-08-19T18:08:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsreservoir.com\/?p=6125"},"modified":"2020-08-19T18:08:53","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T18:08:53","slug":"amdf-condemns-harassment-of-journalists-by-nigeria-police-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsreservoir.com\/?p=6125","title":{"rendered":"AMDF Condemns Harassment Of Journalists By Nigeria Police Force"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">AMDF Condemns Harassment Of Journalists By Nigeria Police Force<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Zainab Tanimu<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Kaduna, North-West, Nigeria<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Police in Nigeria must ensure proper conduct of personnel and desist<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">from unlawful harassment of journalists in the discharge of their<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">duties.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">A statement issued by the Program Officer, Africa Media Development Foundation, Joy Gadani strongly condemning this act calls for caution on the part of the police as such act is not only embarrassing but unacceptable.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The statement reveals that,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;Reports say Police in Zaria-Kaduna North West Nigeria, on Wednesday<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">August 12 arrested and detained Mustapha Yauri , a Zaria district<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">correspondent of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) for several hours while<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">covering a rift between trailer drivers and the state\u2019s traffic law<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">enforcement agency, popularly known as KASTELEA.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">According to Yauri, he had just concluded his interviews\u00a0 with eye<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">witness on the scene and had proceeded to take pictures when a plain<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">clothe officer attempted to seize his phone but he declined.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe police officer whom I later learned that he is the Divisional Crime<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Officer then called some armed police men and told them to take me to<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">police station to detain me and bring my phone back to him\u201d.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cI was detained at the police station for many hours before the DPO Mr.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Ibrahim Abdullahi came into the office and called me for a meeting in<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">his office where he apologized for what happened to me\u201d,\u00a0 says local<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">reports.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Speaking with AMDF, Yauri said it was the most embarrassing thing that<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">could happen to him, he said although the District Police Officer (DPO)<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">apologized, the officer responsible insisted he did nothing wrong worth<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">apologizing.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The chairman, Nigeria union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna Council,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Comrade Adamu Yusuf also spoke to AMDF Press Freedom desk and he<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">lamented the ignorance of some men of the Nigeria Police Force who still<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">harass journalists on duty even with proper identification.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;Security operatives must learn to draw the line between performing their<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">duties of securing lives and property and the abuse of power given to<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">them by the constitution.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">AMDF strongly condemns the harassment and consequent detention of Mustapha Yauri; we are calling on the Nigerian Police Force to give its<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">men necessary enlightenment on the indispensable role of journalists in<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">the society, and ensure proper conduct of personnel.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Journalists in Nigeria must be allowed to perform their duties free from<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">harassment as the fourth estate of the realm.
