The Nigeria Union of Journalists,(NUJ) has decried the unending assault on the media, as the National Broadcasting corporation, (NBC) fined Arise Television, Channels Television and the AIT,over alleged unprofessional conduct.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The NUJ wondered why instead of applauding the media organizations for their professional coverage of the #EndSARS protests despite the risks involved, the NBC, is trying to muzzle the Media, describing the action as unnecessary and discriminatory.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
According to a Statement tagged \u2018Unending Assault On the Media\u2019 signed by the National President, Comrade Chris lsiguzo, on Monday,<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\"\"<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
the Union called for an end to the open contempt and disrespect for the media by NBC, thereby calling for the immediate withdrawal of the fines imposed.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The statement said:<\/div>\n

\u201d The decision by industry regulator, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to penalise Arise Television, Channels Television and AIT over what it alleges as unprofessional coverage of the #EndSARS protests across the country further exposes the nation\u2019s anti-democratic tendencies.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201d Rather than trying to muzzle the media, we suggest that the NBC should applaud media coverage of the protests and the professionalism of Journalists who despite the enormous risks to their lives ensured a comprehensive coverage of the protests.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201d This development is of major concern to the Union as journalists and media organisations are targets of attack by both protesters and Government.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201d The media, despite all its perceived short comings remains the most viable tool for good governance and democracy and should be jealously guarded and protected.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201d Actions like this only bring back unpleasant memories of the long tenure of Military rule and the established culture of intolerance against the media when Nigeria recorded her most grievous crimes against the industry.<\/div>\n

\u201d Sadly, we are once more witnessing actions that seek to undermine the profession by both State and non-State actors.<\/div>\n
