Former Nigerian Vice President, Arc Muhammed\u00a0 Namadi Sambo has expressed the importance of education in the realization of any\u00a0 nation’s developmental stride.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This was expressed during the former opening ceremony of fourth quarter delegate conference and presentation of award of excellence of Conference of Alumni Associations of Nigerian Universities. (CAANU).<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The conference which was held in Kaduna had delegates from across the states.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\"\"<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In his welcome address Arc Sambo acknowledged the numerous challenges facing the university system in the country which he said has affected teaching and learning in the institutions.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“I\u00a0welcome all\u00a0delegates to the Conference of\u00a0Alumni Association of Nigerian Universities. It is\u00a0gratifying to note that this event is holding at this crucial period when our\u00a0University Education system is undergoing some critical change.<\/div>\n
Certainly, no better time than now.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“University Education is key to the development of any country.<\/div>\n
There are\u00a0 numerous challenges facing our University system in the country which has no doubt affected teaching and learning in our ivory towers.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
These challenges had crippled the system that it’s gradually losing its heroic pasts. It is indeed very worrisome to note with great concern, the exponential rise in travel for education abroad.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Former Nigerian No.2 Citizen commended the efforts of CAANU to seek formidable relationship with international and national bodies as a way of ensuring institutional policy of governance and development.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“I am aware of efforts by the Conference of Alumni Associations of Nigeria<\/div>\n
Universities (CAANU) as the umbrella body of Alumni Associations in Nigerian<\/div>\n
Universities, over time to seek a formidable relationship with Association of Commonwealth Universities, National Universities Commission, TETFUND; the administration of various Universities as well as various aim to empower and integrate the participation of various stakeholders with the institutional policy governance while developing the participation of Alumni bodies in the disciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to advance the leverage for a level playing ground through inter-vasity approaches to advancement development, collaboration and cooperation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0“I am also aware that CAANU has been pursuing its objectives which includes provision of alternative sources of funding; forum for the joint operation of common matters, strategies and actions affecting the opportunity for individual Alumni Associations to learn from one another, common platform for interaction with Federal, State Govenment and proprietors of Private universities on matters affecting University Education in Nigeria and other noble and positive objectives all in the interest of development of Nigerian Universities.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0“It is thus important that well meaning<\/div>\n
individuals and corporate organizations cooperate with CAANU towards<\/div>\n
achieving these goals that would reposition the fate of our dear nation in positive direction.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0“It is also very pertinent to identify with the Nigerian students as the nation<\/div>\n
is going through another strike action as embarked upon by the Academic Staff<\/div>\n
Unions of Universities (ASUU), which had paralyzed academic activities in the<\/div>\n
system for almost eight months. lt is gratifying to note the offer made by the<\/div>\n
Federal Government to members of ASUU, though not exhaustively meeting<\/div>\n
the demands of the union but certainly it is a bold step towards resolving the<\/div>\n
lingering crises in our University education.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Conference consider the establishment of an endowment fund in our respective<\/div>\n
institutions to augment funding for research and critical infrastructure in our<\/div>\n
universities. Expectedly, Alumni of each institution will drive the process of<\/div>\n
mobilizing the private sector and philanthropies to generate resources and<\/div>\n
support for the endowment fund to pursue a cause that would fast track the<\/div>\n
country’s transition to a knowledge-based soclety.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0Namadi commended the leadership of the governing council towards advancing the educational sector.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“DIstinguished Delegates, ladies and gentlemen, let me at this juncture,<\/div>\n
commend my brother, the Chairman of Governing Council, Prof. Ahmed Tijani<\/div>\n
Mora and the leadership of the Alumni of Nigerian Universities for recognizing<\/div>\n
Our modest contributions to the educational sector and humanity that<\/div>\n
necessitated the Award of Excellence to be bestowed on me and indeed other<\/div>\n
notable Nigerians today. No doubt, this honour is a call to duty that will spur us<\/div>\n
to do more for a system that has given so much to us. I therefore on behalf of<\/div>\n
all recipient of this prestigious award, sincerely appreciate the organizers of the event for the rare honour and recognition.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Commendation was also given to the Kaduna state government for its pursuit to achieving quality education.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Before I conclude this remarks, let me acknowledge the efforts of my<\/div>\n
brother, His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir EI-Rufai,<\/div>\n
in various sectors in the State most especially in the education and<\/div>\n
infrastructural development sectors. I am aware of efforts by the Kaduna State<\/div>\n
government to relocate this University to a permanent site that will accommodate the increasing number of students seeking admission to study each year.<\/div>\n
