CAJ Holds General Meeting, Sets-up Its Governing Council<\/div>\n

The Congress of African Journalists (CAJ) has completed its first General Meeting.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Congress on the 24th November, 2020 elected its Governing Council for a three-year term to address issues affecting journalists and their organizations in Africa.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe extend solidarity to all journalists, media workers, and the<\/div>\n
respective media organizations in this trying moment. The CAJ is set to<\/div>\n
be an inclusive platform to address all issues affecting journalists,<\/div>\n
media workers, editors, in their work in Africa,\u201d said Alexandre<\/div>\n
Niyungeko, president of CAJ. \u201cWe call on female journalists particularly<\/div>\n
to join the Congress and to lead on a number of programs envisaged to<\/div>\n
address issues related to gender-based violence, sexual and verbal<\/div>\n
harassment, as well as online abuse. The commitments to fight specific<\/div>\n
threats facing female journalists must be reinforced\u201d.<\/div>\n

Leaders elected in the Governing Council are President, Alexandre<\/div>\n
Niyungeko (Burundi); Vice-President, Christopher Isiguzo (Nigeria);<\/div>\n
Secretary, William Oloo (Kenya); Treasurer, Ms. Monique Kacou (C\u00f4te<\/div>\n
d\u2019Ivoire). Others elected as members of the Governing Council were:<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Foster Dongozi (Zimbabwe); Ibrahima Ndiaye (Senegal); Ms. Idda Francis<\/div>\n
Mushi (Tanzania; Ms. Indira Correia Balde (Guinea Bissau); and Siyabonga<\/div>\n
Dlamini (Swaziland). Reserve Members are Abdalle Ahmed Mumin (Somalia);<\/div>\n
Ms. Patsy Athanase (Seychelles); and Emmanuel Chibwana (Malawi).<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
In the first part of the General Meeting on 20 October 2020, the Congress adopted its constitution allowing journalists union and<\/div>\n
associations to join as full member affiliates; and other media and editors organizations as associate affiliates.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThe Congress of African Journalists is open to all member unions and associations of Journalists in the African continent \u201cOther journalists organizations (editors guild, media and journalism trainers\u2019 organizations, etc.) can be<\/div>\n
admitted with the associate member status. \u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The General Meeting, which was hosted by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), received a presentation from the United<\/div>\n
Nations-Office of the Special Advisor on Africa on the SDG Media Compact.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The CAJ condemns all attacks on journalists and calls for the release of<\/div>\n
all journalists out of jail. The CAJ resolves to continue to engage all Governments, the African Union, and partners to uphold press freedom, the safety of journalists, freedom of expression, and access to<\/div>\n
