The Catholic Archdiocese of Kaduna in its bid to advance its members on\u00a0Information and Communications Technology (ICT), News Writing and\u00a0 Reporting has trained over 100 youth within the metropolis.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
The training which was organized by Social Communication Commission of the Archdiocese was held at the Catholic social centre Kaduna.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Three resource persons were engaged to give participants better understanding of the subjects.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In his presentation, the first resource person Mr Michael Ideva with the topic titled “Video Editing Principles”,\u00a0 described the social media as a very powerful tool.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The social media he said has the largest population, urging that they (Participants) use the tool to sell their ideas, product and services.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Take advantage of the social media and internet to sell ideas, products and services, which would earn you income rather than engage in irrelevant issues.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Take advantage of the social media to sell ideas, products and services that could earn you good income instead of waiting for government employment”.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Participants were taken through the use of blogging, modern communications techniques and marketing, simple database and uses, graphics design, video editing and news coding.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Digital marketing is a solution to unemployment. Ideva stressed.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Secretary, Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council, Comrade John Femi Adi presenting his paper\u00a0 titled, News Writing Principles\/News Coding Principles also urged the Participants to make good use of the social media.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He stressed on the importance of using the principles of the 5w’s and ‘h’ to enrich one’s writing.<\/div>\n

Femi gave an overview on News Coding and practicals on how best participants can enhance their News Coding skills for effective communication.<\/div>\n

The participants were put through practical sessions on how to create Blogging, Database and Web creation which is required for Digital Marketing.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In her own presentation, a veteran journalist and retired Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) staff, hajiya Zainab Tanimu with the topic titled, Content Writing Principles engaged the participants with the nitty -gritty of television production.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Simply defined, “Content Writing covers a vast range of different forms of writing, including writing for Search Engine Optimisation, to encourage conversions and sales and generally to make a brand or business look more attractive and appealing to a broader audience.<\/div>\n
“To be able to catch the interest of your audience, you need to create a powerful content. You need to speak their language.<\/div>\n
Tailor your content towards the peoples needs putting into consideration the culture and other variables that could negate the proper dissemination of information to your target audience.”<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
The basic principles of journalism reporting should be adhered to at all times. She emphasized.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Make sure you are factual in your reportage. You should adhere to the major characteristics of news writing. Ensuring accuracy, balance, objectivity, making sure that your content is concise and clear and it also has to be current.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n“Strong, clear writing is the backbone of any script. If your story doesn\u2019t make sense to your audience, they will quit watching.<\/div>\n
“News writing attempts to answer all the basic questions about any particular event\u2014who, what, when, where and why (the Five Ws) and also often how?<\/div>\n
Make use of active voice.<\/span><\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
As a broadcaster, she explained. “You should be able to communicate effectively through excellent writing skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Hook your audience when you are writing a tease or lead.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Write to your video. Video enriches the story your viewers see. Use it to put your audience at the scene and then use the script to explain what they are not seeing. In television production, you allow the picture to tell the story.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
“Television production is a team work. In order to be successful in your production, all hands would have to be on deck for the success of the programme, be it news, drama, documentary.” She ended.<\/div>\n

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Director of\u00a0 Social Communication Commissions, Rev. Fr. Stephen Onyema disclosed that, the aim of the training is to make the Participants better Communicators and to improve the mode of communication within the Archdiocese and the social media at large.<\/div>\n

This year’s training is with a difference, he explained in a brief interview with our Newsreservoir correspondent.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“This training is an annual programme, but that of this year is more elaborate and more captivating because we took time to invite resource persons.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
In the past, it used to be one day seminar. This is the first time we are doing it for 3days.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As to his impression of the event, he has this to say.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“lt is quite interesting and fulfilling. I will say, with the turn out, we have achieved our objective. This is not the end. This is just the starting point within town. We will move to the rural areas.<\/div>\n
We will go to Kachia, Dogonkurmi and Demo dinary for the same program me.”<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Fr. Onyena charged the Participants to put into practice what they have learnt in other to better their lives and that of their families.<\/div>\n

the Secretary, Archdiocesan Pastoral Executive Council (APEC) Revd Sr. Rita Schwarzenberger before the presenting certificates to participants had in their separate speeches encouraged them to put into practice the knowledge acquired.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

” Use the new technology well. Use it to aspire for truth. Use it to bring about positive change. Promote dialogue and avoid fake news. The truth must prevail.”<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Speaking, Sister Revd Rita emphasized on the importance of upholding the truth in our reportage.<\/div>\n
As communicators, we should speak the truth and not to spread false information otherwise we will be paving way for conflicts , prejudices and other vices. She said.<\/div>\n

\n“When you are disseminating your\u00a0 information, ask yourself, what is the implication?<\/div>\n

\nThe Chairman, Local\u00a0 Organizing Committee, Mr. Felix Sha’adu,<\/div>\n
while appreciating the Director, Social Communication, Revd Fr. Onyema and other members of the committee for their support and commitments in ensuring a successful outing, urged the participants to make the best use of what they learnt from the 3day seminar.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“I can say with full confidence that the objective of this seminar has been achieved.<\/div>\n

Our desire is to empower members that are in different parishes especially in the area of news writing.<\/div>\n

At the center where we have ‘Cross News, a monthly newspaper for the church, we want a situation whereby when there is an even we have correspondents who are capable to cover events in different parishes. That will ease our jobs at the center because we have few staff and that is where the ‘Cross News’ is.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Training is to renew mind and to improve a person in understanding the work that he does. Therefore, l will advise other denominations that are currently not doing what we are doing to embark on training their youth to aquire knowledge in helping out in parish activities.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
In that way, the work load will not be too much for local pastors that are sent to particular areas. He added.<\/div>\n

Some of the participants interviewed described the training as beneficial. They\u00a0 thanked the Catholic church and Social Communication Commission\u00a0 for giving them the opportunity to advance their knowledge while promising<\/div>\n
\u00a0to make the best use of what was acquired.<\/div>\n
