May Day Celebration: Labour Calls For Review Of Pension Inline\u00a0 With Minimum Wage<\/div>\n

Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC,) and Trade Union Congress, (TUC),\u00a0 have decried the untold sufferings pensioners are made to go through after spending their youthful age serving the nation.<\/div>\n
Some of them it said collect as low as N5,000 as pension, which it described as unacceptable.<\/div>\n

This was disclosed in the Workers\u2019 Day address by the President of NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, President TUC Comrade Quadri Olaleye, presented by the Kaduna NLC Chairman, Comrade Ayuba Suleiman on Saturday at Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
” In fact, some states pay as less as N5,000 as monthly pension.<\/div>\n
Comrades, this is really not acceptable and therefore inline with the provision of section 173, sect.3 of Nigerian Constitution, we demand that the pension should be reviewed and that it should be done inline with the minimum wage.”<\/div>\n

It added that following the report of the 2014 pension Act, which is the current Act of the contributory scheme, it is aware of the backlogs of trillions of accrued pension money yet to be funded. There is urgent need to address the pension issue. It called.<\/div>\n

\u00a0” We are not going to allow a situation where contributions of workers will be charted away by our political elites.<\/div>\n
The contribution is important retirement savings account and therefore no politician should think that the contributory pension money is a free money.<\/div>\n

” We commend the President , President Mohammadu Buhari for approving two days ago the national minimum pension for Nigerian pensioners. We hope that this will be implemented so that the issue of the minimum pension will in turn be addressed. He said.<\/div>\n

On the recent mass sack and casualization of\u00a0more than 60% of the workforce in Kaduna state, the union considers it as ”\u00a0the most brutal attack on workers and trade union rights in our nation\u2019s history ”.<\/div>\n

\u201d You would recall that between 2016 and this year,the Kaduna state Governor, Mr Nadir El-Rufai sacked 21,770 primary school teachers, 7,310 local government employees,,3,000 Personnel in the State civil service and 1,240 Workers at the<\/div>\n

According to organized labour while the disengaged workers still licking their wounds the Governor went further to \u201d increase the School fees of Kaduna State university by almost 500%, this clearly shows a well mapped plan to make the children of the working class to destitutes, is this how Mr. El-Rufai understands development \u201d..<\/div>\n

The\u00a0 actions of the Governor the NLC added,\u00a0 \u00a0\u201d are in breach of\u00a0 section 20 Sub Section 1(a-c),2 and 3 of Nigeria\u2019s Labour Act which demand consultation with workers representative organizations before redundancy letters are issued to Workers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Speaking, the Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists Comrade Adamu Yusuf, also expressed concern over the recent sack of workers in Kaduna state.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

For someone who has put up 38yrs of service sacked without entitlement is disheartening.<\/div>\n
That a lot of those workers disengaged in 2014 are yet to receive their entitlements.<\/div>\n
” Now, more are sacked, amongst them are disabled, you have the blind. Where do we want them to go? Compounded is the issue insecurity. Its really a pathetic situation. He said<\/div>\n
