ASUP Urges Government To Impose Strict Adherence To\u00a0 Provisions of\u00a0 Polytechnic Act<\/div>\n

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Zone A, has called on the Government to impose Strict adherence to provisions of Polytechnic Act as non adherence could pose a setback to the smooth running of the institutions.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This was part of the issues raised during its 3rd quarter 2021, Zonal Executive Council’s (ZEC) meeting held at Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic Sokoto from<\/div>\n
30th August to 1st September, 2021.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The opening session of the meeting which encompassed\u00a0member institutions from Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, Jigawa, Zamfara and Niger States was chaired by the Zonal Coordinator Dr\u00a0Kasim Ibrahim.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
At the meeting, issues of\u00a0Zonal and National interests affecting the general l\u00edvelihood of the citizens and the Polytechnic Education in Nigeria were\u00a0discussed exhaustively.<\/div>\n

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE THIRD (3RD) QUARTER 2021<\/div>\n
ZONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (ZEC) MEETING OF<\/div>\n
ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF POLYTECHNICS (A$UP) ZONEA.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
1, ZEC observed and also mindful of the essence and fundamentals of human<\/div>\n
security in line with the current security situation in Nigeria. ZEC is<\/div>\n
worrisome, that the wave of killings, attacks and kidnappings in the country<\/div>\n
is alarming by all stretch of human imaginations. ZEC therefore call on<\/div>\n
Governments at all levels to do everything possible that is within its purview to address the issue of security in Nigeria.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
2. ZEC empha\u015fizes with dismay, the failure of Managements of some Federal<\/div>\n
institutions to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Polytechnic Act as<\/div>\n
amended 2019 and harmonized retirement age. An empirical evidence which corroborated this flagrant violation is the continuous existence of persons<\/div>\n
which by the provision of the law ought to vacate their positions, example is<\/div>\n
in the Federal Polytechnic Bida. ZEC members unanimously stand to urge<\/div>\n
Government to impose strict adherence to the provisions of the Polytechnic<\/div>\n
Act.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
3. ZEC frowns at the Condition of Services of member institutions in Kaduna,<\/div>\n
Katsina and Zamfara States owned institutions where members are still paid<\/div>\n
with an obsolete CONTISS Salary Scheme structure. Governments of these<\/div>\n
States are urged by ZEC to implement the CONPCASS Salary Structure Scheme<\/div>\n
to meet the national standard.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
4. ZEC noted the incessant increase in the pricee observed effort by the Federal Governmen price under the guise of Petroleum Industry R<\/div>\n
which m\u00e1y increase the hardship<\/div>\n
appeal to the Goyernment to maintain the cur 1s highly<\/div>\n
review it downward.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
5. ZEC is concerned that the federal government is yet to fulfill its part of the<\/div>\n
agreement it entered with ASUP for the suspended strike by the Union and urged the Government to address Union’s demands and release the 15 billion Naira rivitalization fund and minimum wage arrears with immediate in order to salvage the sector from imminent collapse.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
6. Discussions on Non-remittances of Union dues from staff salary in some States<\/div>\n
institutions in Zamfara, Niger and Kebbi States featured prominently and ZEC<\/div>\n
urged Governments of the aforementioned States to hasten the release of<\/div>\n
Union dues for industrial harmony and smooth running of Union’s activities.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
7. Afirming the vital role of technical education in Nigeria, ZEC calls on<\/div>\n
Governments to harness the experiences, knowledge and practical<\/div>\n
experiences of members in the sector for National and overall human growth.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
8. ZEC expresses satisfaction regarding members’ unbroken efforts in furthering<\/div>\n
their education at various levels of human endeavours, both in Nigeria and<\/div>\n
abroad, through various interventions\/scholarships. ZEC calls on members to<\/div>\n
ensure that the knowledge acquired is used for the advancement of the sector<\/div>\n
and national dev\u0119lopment.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The ZEC appreciates the effort of the Government and security officers in curbing the security challenges bedeviling the country, however, more efforts are solicited from all relevant security and non-security agencies and the public in that regards.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u00a0ZEC prays for the continuous existence of Nigeria as a united entity free from religious and ethnic bias.<\/div>\n
