NAWOJ Kaduna Advocates Justice for Female Inmates, Extends Compassion Through Free Medical Outreach<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kaduna State Chapter, has reaffirmed its dedication to promoting justice, compassion, and social change through advocacy and community service.<\/p>\n

During a visit to the\u00a0Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kaduna<\/strong>, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Kaduna,\u00a0Comrade Sahura Jibrin Maidoki<\/strong>, pledged the association\u2019s commitment to\u00a0advocating for the speedy trial of female inmates with minor offences<\/strong>. She explained that many of these women remain in custody due to prolonged legal processes, despite their offences being minor and bailable.<\/p>\n

Comrade Maidoki emphasized that the visit was part of NAWOJ\u2019s broader mission to\u00a0amplify the voices of vulnerable women<\/strong>\u00a0through impactful reportage and public advocacy. She appealed to\u00a0government agencies, philanthropists, and civil society groups<\/strong>\u00a0to support female inmates by facilitating access to legal aid and helping those with minor cases regain their freedom.<\/p>\n

While receiving the journalists, the\u00a0Assistant Controller of the Custodial Centre, Lawal Talle<\/strong>, commended NAWOJ for the thoughtful visit, noting that such gestures remind inmates that society still cares about their welfare. He added that the centre continues to uphold its mandate of\u00a0reforming and rehabilitating offenders<\/strong>, with several inmates engaged in skill acquisition and others pursuing education through the\u00a0National Open University of Nigeria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As part of the visit, NAWOJ donated\u00a0essential items<\/strong>\u00a0such as slippers, bathing soap, toilet rolls, detergents, underwear, and baby diapers to support the female inmates.<\/p>\n

The outreach formed part of NAWOJ Kaduna\u2019s three-day program themed\u00a0\u201cVoices of Impact 2025: Women, Media & Social Change.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In continuation of the activities, the association organized a\u00a0free medical outreach<\/strong>\u00a0for residents of\u00a0Sabon Gero community<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Chikun Local Government Area<\/strong>, benefiting more than\u00a0200 people<\/strong>, mostly women and children.<\/p>\n

The medical mission provided\u00a0free consultations, laboratory tests, and essential medications<\/strong>, including\u00a0eye and ear check-ups, malaria and typhoid screenings, deworming treatments<\/strong>, and distribution of\u00a0sanitary pads, vitamin supplements, and paracetamol<\/strong>. Drugs worth over\u00a0\u20a6500,000<\/strong>\u00a0were distributed to residents at no cost.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the event, Comrade Maidoki described the outreach as part of NAWOJ\u2019s continuous effort to\u00a0uplift underprivileged communities<\/strong>\u00a0and promote public health.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal is to bring healthcare closer to those who cannot afford hospital visits or buy drugs,\u201d she said. \u201cHealth is the foundation of life, and through this initiative, we hope to improve the well-being of our people.\u201d<\/p>\n

She expressed joy over the massive turnout, describing it as a testament to NAWOJ\u2019s growing reputation for\u00a0trust and impact<\/strong>. She also commended members and the executive council for their teamwork, which ensured the success of the program.<\/p>\n

During the outreach, a child in urgent need of medical attention was identified, and Comrade Maidoki assured that NAWOJ would take up the case with the relevant authorities for swift intervention.<\/p>\n

She further called on the\u00a0Kaduna State Government<\/strong>\u00a0to collaborate with NAWOJ on future health and social programs, emphasizing that media partnership can strengthen the impact of public health campaigns across communities.<\/p>\n

Former NAWOJ Kaduna Chairperson,\u00a0Mrs. Jummai Yarima<\/strong>, praised the current leadership for sustaining the association\u2019s legacy of service and urged them to continue their life-changing interventions.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Secretary of NAWOJ Kaduna<\/strong>,\u00a0Comrade Hadiza Abdullahi Bello<\/strong>, appreciated the\u00a0Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board<\/strong>,\u00a0ENT specialists<\/strong>,\u00a0Sight Savers<\/strong>, and\u00a0iMac<\/strong>\u00a0for their collaboration and support.<\/p>\n

Community leaders in Sabon Gero, including the\u00a0Ward Head and Youth Leader<\/strong>, expressed deep gratitude to NAWOJ for the outreach, describing it as a timely and life-saving intervention for many families. They called on other organizations to emulate the journalists\u2019 humanitarian spirit.<\/p>\n

Through its dual commitment to\u00a0advocacy and social service<\/strong>,\u00a0NAWOJ Kaduna<\/strong>\u00a0continues to stand as a beacon of compassion\u2014giving voice to the voiceless, empowering women, and promoting healthier, stronger communities across the state.<\/strong><\/div>\n
