Maths Still Compulsory for Many University Courses in Nigeria \u2014 Authorities Clarify<\/p>\n

Reports suggesting that Mathematics is no longer compulsory for university admission in Nigeria have been clarified, with authorities explaining that the change only affects some Arts and Humanities-related programmes.<\/p>\n

Recent explanations linked to the Federal Ministry of Education and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board indicate that a credit pass in Mathematics may no longer be mandatory for admission into certain Arts, Humanities and language-based courses in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.<\/p>\n

However, Mathematics remains a compulsory requirement for several science and technical programmes.<\/p>\n

These include Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, and other science and technology-related disciplines.<\/p>\n

The clarification follows widespread reactions and confusion on social media after claims emerged that Mathematics had been completely removed as an admission requirement for tertiary institutions in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Education stakeholders explained that the adjustment is limited to selected non-science courses and should not be interpreted as a total removal of Mathematics from admission criteria.<\/p>\n

Authorities further stressed that the policy does not affect candidates seeking admission into professional, scientific and technology-driven fields where Mathematics remains essential.<\/p>\n

There were also reports suggesting that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board was no longer required for university admission.<\/p>\n

The Federal Government, however, clarified that JAMB remains a mandatory part of the admission process into tertiary institutions across the country.<\/p>\n

The development has continued to generate debate among students, parents and education stakeholders over the relevance of Mathematics in higher education admission requirements.<\/p>\n
