It is what guides us to tell the truth, keep our promises, or help someone in need.

Ethical empowerment enables good people to do good things, which involves considerable skill in implementing what is morally good or correct.

Growing evidence reveals that trust and ethics are both critical to the building of sustainable economy and also the future that every society wants. It is essential for every aspect of development – from policy-making to economics and society. Trust can drive progress, investment, and cohesion.

Empowering ethics in any society will not only unlock their full potential but also cultivate a culture of trust, innovation, and collaboration with a high level of citizens’ satisfaction and commitment.

Ethical empowerment focuses on diffusing the barriers that stand in the way of doing good (rather than characterizing ethics itself as an obstacle). Thereby promoting fairness and justice, as well as encouraging the habit of doing even more good by going above and beyond the call of duty.

Ethics plays an essential role in guiding decision-making processes in numerous fields, including community development. It provides frameworks that enable us to assess the rightness or wrongness of actions and decisions, considering their consequences, the intentions behind them, and the virtues they uphold.

Furthermore, ethics and values make an individual aware that their choices have consequences, both for themselves and others. Thus, ethics and values build credibility and leadership skills, improves decision making, and provides long term gains.

A dearth of ethics will not only bring moral degradation but also stunts the socio-economic growth and aspirations of a society.

In simple terms, there is no socio-economic progress without the adoption of the basic tenets of good ethics.

Unfortunately, in the Nigeria of today, there is a severe lack of good ethics. Hence, we continue to suffer the ramifications of the worsening conditions in all the parts that make up the socio-economic fabric of our country.

This ongoing hindrance to our socio-economic development is unsustainable, and an urgent adoption of good ethics is imperative if we are to move forward as a society.

To further emphasize the importance of ethics in powering this development, I have listed out some of the most important parts of socio-economic development and the importance of good ethics in securing the future of our society and our economy:

1) *Education:* When good ethics are adopted within the education system, a good quality of education is almost completely guaranteed. Good quality education provides society with people who are knowledgeable and skilled. This helps to improve the overall health and living standards within the society.

2) *Economic Growth:*

When society has a highly skilled and well-educated workforce, economic growth becomes a common goal that society actively works towards achieving. Economic growth can create jobs, reduce poverty, and encourage political and social stability within the society.

3) *Social Protection:*

In countries that encourage and reward good ethics, we often see the presence of social protection programs that help to prevent and alleviate poverty, especially for those who are socially excluded. This translates into a safer society for all, as those who are often left in the fringes of society and lead a life of crime, are then brought back into the fold and can be encouraged to become constructive members of society.

4) *Social entrepreneurship:*

In a society that champions good ethics, social entrepreneurship becomes even more prevalent. In such a society, we will see the positive effects of social entrepreneurship, as the resolution for social and environmental problems that the public and private sector can not address are then tackled by social entrepreneurs. This leads to a well-balanced society that everyone has the chance to dream and potentially achieve.

5) *Gender Equality:*

Gender equality is a very important part of the socio-economic development of a country. Women who make up half of the population must have their rights recognized and protected. If this does not happen, the society cannot operate at its optimal level of efficiency.

6) *Public health:* As the saying goes, ‘Health is Wealth’. In Nigeria, due to a decay in our ethics, we continue to see degradation in our health facilities and an exodus of a lot of our healthcare professionals. Public health is a key part of the national wealth, if we keep getting poorer in our public health, we will continue to witness a steep decline in our country’s wealth. Easy access to good quality public health is important for maintaining a healthy population, and a healthy population is a key source of development potential.

7) *Data:*

In this age of data and information, the integrity of the data we collect is highly important for socio-economic development. Data is needed for the smooth planning and running of activities that can be crucial to the safety of lives and properties. Hence, we must dissuade the practice of cutting corners in data collection and management if we want to progress as a country.

In summary, a key factor separating the Nigeria of today that we are unhappy with, and the Nigeria that we all hope for – a Nigeria where all can live, dare to dream and thrive in – is the adoption of good ethics.

We, at ASJEV, believe that a better Nigeria is possible, and we must urgently adopt and champion good ethics if we want to witness the massive socio-economic development we critically need as a nation.

Mr. Ayodeji Abdulrauf is a business administrator, a Chartered Stock Broker. He is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of ThinkStartup Beyond Boarders Inc, (a Management Consultancy company).

Abdulrauf is President, NASFAT Worldwide.

PRESENTATION: *Ethics Empowered for Socio-Economic Development of the Society by Mr Ayodeji Abdulrauf, FCS, CBAP, CeMAP ** Being paper delivered during ‘World Ethics Day’s Celebration at Lagos State Public Sector Staff Development Center Nagodo, Lagos.
