In Islam, Zakat is not merely an act of worship; it is also a means of strengthening social responsibility, easing hardship and ensuring that wealth reaches those who are genuinely in need. When properly collected and distributed, Zakat can help vulnerable people regain dignity and create opportunities for them to become self-reliant.

It was in this spirit that the NASFAT Kaduna Main Branch carried out its 2026 Zakat Distribution Exercise, with items worth about N3.5 million presented to carefully screened beneficiaries to support their livelihoods and ease their economic challenges.

The Chairman of NASFAT Kaduna Main Branch, Alhaji Sulaeman Alebiosun, disclosed that about N3.5 million was raised for the exercise, stressing that the beneficiaries were selected through a rigorous screening process to ensure that the intervention reached those who genuinely needed assistance.

According to him, about 50 applications were received from people seeking support. The applicants were subsequently invited and screened, with the organisers assessing their individual circumstances and listening to their needs before deciding on those who qualified for assistance.

He explained that the exercise was anchored on the Islamic principle that Zakat purifies wealth while providing care and support for widows, orphans, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable members of society.

Also speaking, the guest lecturer, Professor Yakub Obadike Yusuf, urged Muslims to regard assisting the needy as a responsibility and to support others within their means.

He noted that providing people with the means to earn a livelihood could go beyond immediate relief by helping to reduce poverty and contribute to a more stable society.

The representative of the Chairman of the Day, Abdulrashid Mohammed Jami’u, described Zakat as a practical instrument for addressing poverty and economic hardship.

He stressed that when Zakat is properly collected and responsibly distributed, it can provide immediate relief to vulnerable people while also creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

One of the donors, Dr. Tajuddin Bakare, said the essence of giving was to support people facing difficult circumstances and help alleviate their suffering.

The Zakat intervention saw beneficiaries receive various items designed to support small-scale businesses and enable them to become economically productive.

The items included sewing machines, grinding machines, a popcorn machine, ovens for baking, a vulcanising machine, gas cylinders, tailoring accessories and packs of minerals.

The Zonal Chairman of NASFAT Kaduna Zone, Alhaji Saheed Popoola Gambari, who was represented by the Zonal Secretary, Shoyomi Babajide Azeez, commended the Kaduna Main Branch for sustaining the initiative and urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items.

He encouraged them to see the support not only as assistance received but as an opportunity to improve their livelihoods and, in time, become financially capable of extending similar support to others.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation to NASFAT and the donors for the intervention, praying for Allah’s blessings upon those who contributed to the initiative.

They also expressed their willingness to emulate the gesture by supporting others when they become financially capable.

The beneficiaries noted that the annual Zakat intervention has continued to provide meaningful relief to vulnerable members of the community while helping to reduce the burden of economic hardship.
