Lagos Begins 18-Week Traffic Diversion for Iyana-Iba Bridge Repairs on Badagry Expressway

The Lagos State Government has announced an 18-week traffic diversion on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, beginning Monday, 19 January 2026, to enable critical repair works on the Iyana-Iba interchange bridge.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Transportation, the government explained that the intervention is required to carry out maintenance on the bridge’s expansion joints and strengthen its structural components, in order to guarantee the safety and durability of the busy transport route.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the project forms part of the state’s wider infrastructure renewal programme, aimed at improving road safety while reducing future maintenance costs. He noted that the 18-week duration was carefully planned to allow for extensive engineering work without resorting to full, long-term road closure.

To ease the impact on road users, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has put diversion plans in place. Motorists heading toward Badagry from Mile 2 will be redirected through the service lane at Iyana-Iba, while those coming from the opposite direction will encounter reduced lanes and intermittent diversions.

The state government has also deployed additional LASTMA officers to the Iyana-Iba corridor to manage traffic flow and minimize congestion. Heavy-duty trucks and long-haul vehicles have been advised to use the route during off-peak periods to reduce pressure on the service lanes.
