Worried over the unhealthy atmosphere that has dominated the country’s political terrain of late; the National Body of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for restrain in order that democracy can prevail.

In a press release signed by the National Secretary, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Shuaibu Usman LemanWalin Shadalafiy, the body expresses strong disapproval for the recent siege on the National Assembly by some unscrupulous politicians using the Agents of the Department of State Security.

The action it described as primitive, reckless and a clear sabotage of the nation’s democratic process. The major factor for heating up the political atmosphere in the country the body attributes to the excessive quest for power and who gets what by our politicians who instead of working assiduously to ameliorate the sufferings of the masses who voted them into office are doing the otherwise. The statement said.

“This must abate immediately. It is long overdue for our leadership to overhaul the security architecture of the country to make it work in tandem with the principles of democracy and social equality.

While we commend the swift reaction of the Acting President, Yemi Osibanjo in sacking the Director General of the Department of State Security, Alh Lawal Danra, we however believe more needs to be done and quickly too, in fishing out all those involved in that dastardly act and punishing them accordingly”.
