Sudanese Crises: Egypt finally opens borders for fleeing Nigerians

The Federal Government on Monday confirmed that the Egyptian government has finally opened its borders to allow fleeing Nigerians from war-ravaged Sudan to pass through its country.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the Nigerian government had made arrangements for buses to convey Nigerians from Sudan to Egypt due to the closure of airspace.

But the evacuees have been stranded at the Egyptian border for days due to the country’s refusal to allow free passage despite several interventions by the Nigerian mission in Egypt.

The country insisted that everyone must follow it’s normal visa protocol before crossing the border.

On Monday, the chairman of the Nigeria in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement, said the North African country agreed to open its border for Nigerians after the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari.

She said Mr Buhari spoke with his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, before reaching a truce.

The NIDCOM boss, however, said the Egyptian government agreed to open the border under stringent conditions.

“The border has just been opened, [with stringent conditions] after President Buhari’s intervention with the Egyptian President. So, the processing of evacuees by the Nigerian Embassy in Egypt will begin,” she said.
