A group under the auspices of North Central Progressive Voice in Kaduna has raised concern accusing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of interfering with court proceedings on the alleged money laundering charges levelled against the former governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello.
This was made known in Kaduna as they protested over what they described as the unjust action of the EFCC.
Addressing Journalists during a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat, the group through its spokesperson argued that despite the Lokoja High Court’s pronouncement prohibiting the arrest of Yahaya Bello, the EFCC proceeded to the court of appeal.
It described the raid on Yahya Bello’s house as a breach of the authority and sanctity of the Constitution and legal system.
“On April 17, 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a raid on the home of the former Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Yahaya Bello, with the intent to arrest him on charges related to
money Laundering.
“This incident raises concerns about the EFCC’s actions and their potential violation of constitutional principles, judicial authority, and the rule of law.”
Answering the question as to why Yahya Bello is evading arrest. He said.
“”We are not fighting, we are not preventing Yahaya Bello from being arrested. What we are saying is, allow the law to take it course.
If Yahaya Bello is guilty, then the law should take it course but we are saying, the laws and values of a lower court should also be maintained in our legal system.
“We are saying, the High court should recognize the order of the lower court in the state before any other legal proceedings.”
In a text signed by the Convener of the group, Comrade Yahaya Abubakar, a letter it informed has been written through His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, Executive Governor of Kaduna State to president Tinubu.
The group is therefore seeking for President Tunubu’s intervention for fair and just dispensation of the rule of law.
