In his welcome address, the Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers Kaduna Branch, Engineer Arege Samson Bawa  explained that the branch in line with the theme of the year, “shaping our Sustainable Future through  Engineering” deemed it fit to organize a training to enhance their young engineers with skills.

“As you know, the world is evolving and there are lots of goals that the United Nation (UN) has already put in place that has to be sustainable and some of these sustainable goals have to do with ending poverty, hunger, getting better education including better health.
World engineering day which became an official UNESCO international day in 2019 serves as a global platform to elevate and recognise the contributions of engineers in shaping our world.
“If you look at these sustainable goals, you find out that engineers are at the forefront of driving these sustainable development goals because every area that it is touched, you will see where engineering can come in.
When talking of health, “you can see equipments created by engineers. For example, equipments such as that of scanning and others giving you information concerning your health status.
Coming to that of hunger, which  talks about agriculture, “we have tractors, chemicals and fertilisers, others.
In the area of infrastructure, “you have construction of roads and other being done by engineers.
“We are in this workshop because part of the development goals has to do with green energy. We gather here to explore solar photovoltaic systems, which are not only a critical component of sustainable energy but also directly aligned with the SDG of Affordable and Clean Energy.
“We have brought some young engineers because this has to do with emerging energy that we can train them on how to design and install solar photovoltaic system. By so doing will give them some skills to be able to contribute to engineering expertise.  Like being able to carry out installation of solar systems in our homes.
The Chairman also used the opportunity to touch on some of the achievements recorded by the Nigerian Society of Engineers Kaduna Branch which he said celebrated its 50th anniversary in the year, 2022.
Nigerian Society of Engineers Kaduna Branch happens to be the umbrella body of engineers in Kaduna.
The society he said has been doing well and has made measurable achievements in different areas of engineering.
“One of such is what we are witnessing today. The objective of the branch is to ensure continuous education of our members. There are other workshops and trainings we organise for our members to ensure that they are up to date with trends of the emerging technology because if you don’t train, and you don’t upgrade yourself professionally, you become irrelevant in this work and that is why the branch is up and doing in this particular area.
As a branch, he added that they advise the government on areas that has to do with engineering exigencies.
Arege encouraged the participants to avail themselves for trainings as well as become a registered member of society of engineers because that will expose them to more opportunities.
“I encourage you to take full advantage of this remarkable opportunity. In our rapidly evolving world, skills and knowledge are paramount. Continuous professional development is essential for staying relevant, particularly in the face of emerging technologies.

Engineering is more than just a professional, it is a powerful force for change, driving progress towards a brighter, more sustainable world for all.”

Speaking, the Managing Director, Alim & Associates Ltd. Engr. Muhyideen Alimi Yusuf while addressing participants urged them to take the training seriously as that will help in their future advancement.
In his presentation, the resource person, Engr. Ibrahim Musa, an electrical engineering and renewable energy expert who specializes on solar system installation and wind energy, opened up on various ways one can harness the abundant availability of solar energy to better ones life.
“Why we concern ourselves with solar energy is because we have abundant of sun energy”. Engr. Ibrahim stated.
Engr Ibrahim after taking the young engineers through the nitty- gritty of engineering technologies gave some important information of what the lay man needs to know concerning solar energy and the installation of the solar panel system.
Engr. Musa explaining how the inverter works at its peak
Kaduna he said is one of the states that has 5 peak hours of sun (solar ) per day. He encouraged those with solar panel system to take the advantage of the peak hours in charging their Inverters. However, he stressed on the  need to have good quality inverter for better results.
“In solar energy technology, we have what is called ‘sun peak hours’. That is when the solar energy will be able to harness ‘the most effective energy’. It is from 9, 10, am to 3.30pm.  This is scientifically proven (NASA). And it is equally important when installing your solar panel to tilth it towards the correct angle. Like in Kaduna, it is angle 15%.
Engr. Ibrahim during the practical session explained more on the installation of a solar panel. The necessary precautionary measures and what to look out for in achieving the best.

He noted that some inverters and solar panels are wrongly installed, which resort to ineffective supply of energy.
Everything being equal, one will not go through those unpleasant moments of power outages. He assured.
“You should know that the only disadvantage solar energy has is that of high initial cost but in the long run, it is cheaper than generator because if you buy qualitative items, you can spend five years enjoying your inverter without paying for electricity bill.
“In the case of generator, you need to service, you need to fuel, you need to call technicians for maintenance and the generator will spoil over a time. But with inverter, if you have better design and insulation, you can enjoy it for long. So, the money you spent is worthwhile.  So l will advise that you gather your  money, get a good designer to design an inverter that is of high quality grade for you because you can’t get 24hrs electricity service and if you do, it will be very expensive. For me, l don’t need electricity. l am off grid now. I don’t think l will have a house that l will live in that will live on grid. I have seen the importance and l want other people to see it too.
Another advantage of solar energy is that it does not emit any noise and harzardou gas. It is green energy and has so many advantages.
It is advisable to place our inverters within our corridors, where the sun is not directly on it. Not in the room where we are sleeping because inside the room is enclosed. Said the presenter.
During the interactive session participants were given opportunities to ask questions on grey areas. Pix of questions and answers.
Engr Simon on behalf of his co- engineers appreciating the society and Alim & Associates Ltd. for the opportunity given to them.
On behalf of the participants, Engr. Simon thanked the society of engineers Kaduna Branch and Alims & Associates for providing a platform to enrich themselves while promising to make good use of what was learnt. Pix of Simon.
The coordinator of the training, engineer Afiz Abdulwahab who expressed satisfaction over the conducts of the participants during the training encouraged that the participants use the opportunity of the facilities available at Alim & Associates Ltd. to develop themselves.
At the end of the training, the society in appreciation presented certificates to Alim & Associates Ltd whom in partnership with the Kaduna Branch Society of Engineers made the training possible.
The branch Chairman appreciated the Managing Director, Alim & Associate Ltd, Engr Muhyideen Alimi Yusuf for his contribution towards the development of the branch.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Managing Director, Management and staff of Alim & Associates Ltd. for their invaluable partnership in making the workshop possible. Your commitment to fostering professional development in our field is commendable and l look forward to our continued collaboration in the years to come”.
Also appreciated was the resource person Engr. Ibrahim Musa whom he said is ever ready whenever he is called upon to sacrifice his time.
Every participant was said to have  a certificate of attendance.
Engr. S.A Yusuf, HOD Civil Structure Development, Alim & Associates Receiving  certificate on behalf of Alim & Associates Ltd. from Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers (Engr. Arege, R- L)
