President Buhari Commends D’ Tigress Women Basketball Team Victory

…gave cash gift of N17.5 million as reward

President Muhammadu Buhari has redeemed his promise to reward the country’s ‘Women Basketball team for wining 2017 Afro Basket Championship.

The promise came after the team led by Coach Sam Vincent won the championship in Mali to qualify for the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain. D’ Tigress beat Senegal 65-48 scoring in the final of the tournament held in Mali to emerge African Champion for the first time.

A total of N17.5million has been given to the team for their efforts. Each player got N1million while the 5members of the coaching crew received N500, 000 naira.  The President on Wednesday hosted the victorious national female basketball team before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari, while hosting the players, announced cash gifts of N1 million each for members of the team and N500,000 each to the team’s officials.

Speaking after the President’s gesture to the players, Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung said sports in Nigeria is moving to greater heights through the unprecedented support of President Buhari.
