The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kaduna State Chapter, has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and professional development of its members by providing free eye screening, reading glasses and sanitary pads during its monthly congress.
The congress, held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Kaduna, attracted a large turnout of members and featured robust discussions on issues affecting the association and the journalism profession.
No fewer than 30 members benefited from free eye screening services and the distribution of reading glasses, while sanitary pads were also distributed to participants as part of the chapter’s welfare initiatives.
Speaking shortly after the congress, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Kaduna State Chapter, Comrade Sahura Maidoki, said the programme was in line with her administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of members.
According to her, journalists rely heavily on their eyesight in the course of their duties, making regular eye checks essential for optimal performance.
“Today, NAWOJ Kaduna held its monthly congress to provide an avenue for members to interact with the executive council and discuss key issues affecting the association and the profession. As journalists, our eyes are among the most important tools of our trade, so we considered it necessary to invite health practitioners to examine members’ eyes and provide reading glasses where needed,” she said.
Maidoki disclosed that the reading glasses were donated by Sight Savers Nigeria as part of activities marking Cataract Awareness Month, while the sanitary pads were provided through the support of the wife of the Kaduna State Governor, Hajiya Hafsat Uba Sani.

The health practitioner, Hajiya Halima Adams from Rafin Guza Primary Health Care Centre emphasised that the glasses is meant for reading.

To ensure effective service delivery, the chapter partnered with healthcare personnel from the Rafin Guza Primary Health Care Centre to conduct the eye screening exercise.
The chairperson further highlighted other community-focused activities undertaken by the chapter, noting that members recently visited a government secondary school where sanitary pads were distributed to female students alongside health talks on menstrual hygiene to commemorate World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
She urged members to remain committed to the growth and progress of the association, assuring them that the leadership would continue to prioritise their welfare and professional advancement.
The congress also provided an opportunity for members to raise issues of concern and explore possible solutions. Participants reviewed developments in Kaduna State, commended Governor Uba Sani’s administration for achievements recorded in various sectors, and captured their observations and recommendations in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting.
In her remarks, the Zonal Secretary of NAWOJ Zone A (North-West), Hajiya Daharatu Ahmed Aliyu, who represented the Vice Chairperson of the zone, Hajiya Rabi Mohammed, commended the Kaduna chapter for its dedication to members’ welfare and organisational development.
She praised the leadership of Comrade Sahura Maidoki for introducing impactful initiatives that directly benefit members.
“Having participated in this congress and witnessed the activities of the Kaduna chapter, the zonal office appreciates the efforts of the leadership. We commend the chapter for bringing health professionals to attend to members’ eye health. As journalists, we spend long hours working on computers, mobile phones and documents, making eye care extremely important,” she said.
