Kano State Government Launches “Abba Gida-Gida Students Transportation Relief Program”

The Kano State Government has introduced the Abba Gida-Gida Students Transportation Relief Program, a strategic initiative designed to ease transportation challenges for students in state-owned tertiary institutions.
The Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Higher Education, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, officially inaugurated the program at Gidan Murtala on Wednesday, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to making education more accessible and affordable for students.
This initiative is a key component of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s broader efforts to revamp the education sector, following his declaration of a state of emergency on education in Kano State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, spokesperson for the Deputy Governor, stated that students will pay only 20% of the regular commercial transport fare on designated routes covered by the program.
The initiative commenced with 12 high-capacity buses, which were officially handed over by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on January 9, 2025.
The Abba Gida-Gida Students Transportation Relief Program is designed to provide safe, reliable, and affordable transportation for students, reducing economic burdens and ensuring seamless access to education.
To ensure the program’s efficiency and long-term sustainability, the Ministry for Higher Education, in collaboration with key stakeholders, has implemented an automated payment system to streamline fare transactions.
The Kano State Government remains committed to enhancing educational accessibility and infrastructure, ensuring that financial and logistical constraints do not hinder students from pursuing their academic ambitions.
