A group under the auspices of Concerned Citizens of Katsina state has called on the governor of Katsina state Aminu Bello Masari to go for the senatorial seat.
This call was made in a press conference held at hayatt conference hall, Katsina.
The spokesperson of the group, Alhaji Muhammed Lawal Maikudi speaking on behalf of the group said the group made the decision in consideration of the contributions he has made not only to the people of Katsina state but the nation at large.
“We, the Concerned Citizens of Katsina state made up of over 30 political group call on Governor Bello Masari to contest for the 2023 senatorial seat.
“We need people who are sensible, who listen to people, those who know their people, who know their challenges. People who can relate with whoever from wherever to fashion out policies , plans and programs that will elevate Nigeria from this situation.
Governor Masari’s antecedents the group stated qualifies him for the seat.
“Masari is a grassroot politician. He was a commissioner, 1991, a member, constituency assembly in 1994, a member, House of representatives in 1999, a speaker, 2003 and presently Governor of Katsina state under the platform of All Progressive Congress APC.
“He is finishing his second tenure.
He has made contributions to his people. Not only his people, also to Nigeria. This is why we are asking him to go and represent us there because he has what it takes to build the nation.
“We believe he has the experience, he has the qualities. Infact, if not because president Buhari is from Katsina state, we would have asked him to go for presidency because he is a good material for presidency. The group stated.
Reacting to the issue of insecurity and the statement made as chief executive that people should defend themselves which provoked reactions from various quarters, he said,
Those who reacted were right and he too was right. He was not saying the security agents have stopped defending the citizens but he was urging the public to complement the efforts of the security agents. It is a kind of collective responsibility. You do your own and l will do my own. That is, putting heads together and solve the problem.
“We urge him to go to the senate because these things are happening as a result of poor leadership. If he is there, he can contribute positively. If we had good leadership at the top, the situation would not have deteriorated like this.
It will interest you to know that this same man fought for the sustainability of democracy when he was at the House of Rep. where he fought against president Obasanjo’s plan for a third term in office.
Masari, who was Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007, in an interview with Daily Post,
February 8, 2017 said when it became evident that Obasanjo was not ready to leave office, he had to join others to defend the overall interest of the country, rather than promoting a selfish agenda.
The issue of third term is unconstitutional. The group said.
