It is an act most cherished in the sight of Allah and of immense benefit. It said.

This call was made at the just celebrated Hijra 1445AH held at Doka mosque Kaduna.

The theme of the lecture, “Importance Of Giving Zakkat”,  presented by one of the assistant Missioner’s, Ustah Ismail Kolawole gave an insight of what is expected of a true believer of the religion Islam with regards to payment of Zakkat.

Zakkat he explained forms one of the five pillars of Islam enjoined on Muslims by Allah.

“Zakkat literally means purification. The benefit is that if you pay Zakkat, it is going to purify you. It will also increase your wealth. This simply means that the best way of maximizing our ways of making money is by paying Zakkat.

Payment of Zakkat is compulsory on someone who has the means. It is commanded in the Quran by Allah that Zakkat should be paid.”

He quoted Quran chapter 9, verse 103 where Allah told the Holy Prophet, (saw).

O Prophet), take sadaqa (zakat) out of their property-thou wouldst cleanse them and purify them thereby (Qur’an, ix. 103). And away from it (the Hell) shall be kept the most faithful to duty who gives his wealth, purifying himself (xcii.
Meaning Allah is saying,
Ala-Maududi. (9:103) (O Prophet)! “Take alms out of their riches and thereby cleanse them and bring about their growth (in righteousness), and pray for them. Indeed your prayer is a source of tranquillity for them.” Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

The erudite scholar explaining further,

“Allah said, it is compulsory for us to pay Zakkat just as it is compulsory to observe our salat (prayers). It is Allah ‘s commandment.
He said for one to have the full reward of payment of Zakkat, one must be a true believer. Having the believe and testifying that there is no other deity to be worship except Allah.
Also, a true Muslim should obey all the five pillars of Islam.
Zakkat in the Quran is mentioned alongside prayer. Aside the fact that Zakkat cleanses one’s wealth, it purifies one’s soul. He added.
Zakkat is paid by taking inventory of one’s possessions and wealth. Once they reach nisab or the threshold. The total amount to be paid is 2.5% or 1/40 of
one’s total savings and wealth.
Zakkat is given on a yearly basis.
Nisab is the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to zakat. The Nisab was set by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at a rate equivalent to: 85 grams of gold and 609 grams of silver.
If a Muslim doesn’t reach this threshold, Zakat Al-Mal isn’t required on him or her.
The 8 beneficiaries of Zakat are:
The Poor People (Fuqaraa)
Needy People (Masakeen)
Zakat Collector (Aamileen)
Those Who have a Reconciliation of Heart (Muallafatul Quloob)
To Free those in Bondage (Ar-Riqaab)
The Debt-Ridden (Al Ghaarimeen)
For the Cause of God (Fi Sabeelillah)
Wayfarer.
Ustah Ismail listed some of the benefits of paying Zakkat as follows:
“Payment of Zakkat brings a servant closer to his lord, Allah.
Allah removes minor sins by giving Zakkat.
Aside making one to tow honourable path, it helps in the purification of the heart.
It helps in reducing poverty in the society.
Zakkat is taken from our alal-money.
He urged wealthy Muslim individuals to brace up in the payment of Zakkat to enjoy these benefits.
He noted that those who have the means but refuse to part with some of their wealth which Allah has given them for the sake of Zakkat are making a grievous mistake. Such persons he advised should chart a new live because Allah will surely remove from such individuals that wealth which they are refusing to give.

Fielding questions from Newsreservoir Doka branch Missioner, Ustah Kabir Uthman urged those who do not understand the modalities of paying Zakkat to always seek advise of Mallams (lslamic scholars) saying, some people out of ignorance do not pay Zakkat. Allah enjoined it on every Muslim to seek for knowledge therefore ignorance should  not be an excuse because it is an injunction from Allah.

Some people he said  confuse the act of giving Zakkat with that of sadaqat

For those who do not follow the principles of sharing, for instance,  someone with a total net pay of 30m or 40m at the end of the year and he is sharing 10,000, 30,000, 40,000 to individuals, that is not Zakkat but sadakat. It has to be 2.5% or 1/40 of

one’s total savings and wealth.

Muslims are required to pay Zakkat annually on wealth which includes

currency, gold, silver, and property once it reaches the threshold (nisa).

With reference to the Hijra celebration, he explained.

Hijra is an Arabic words which connotes the act of migration. The Holy prophet SAW migrated from  Mecca to  Medina as commanded by Allah to avoid being persecuted.

The lessons:

“Hijrah is beyond the physical migration. Hijrah symbolises the transformation of oneself.

Members reading the Holy Quran, seeking Allah’s blessings . Ushering in good  tidings in the new year and years ahead
When we talk of Hijra, we talk of  migration of a person from bad to good such as someone distancing himself/herself from bad things. Distancing oneself from negative to positive things. Kind of making resolution for better things. We can also call that as Hijra. So literally meaning moving from one place to a better place. For example,  if you find yourself in an environment where you face a lot of difficulties, you can decide to migrate to a place where you can find peace. That act of movement can be considered as hijra. So let use this period to turn a new live. He advised.
Doka Chairman Hon. Musbau Adepoju thanking Almighty Allah for a successful event explained that the objective behind empowering some of the members is to cushion the hardship people are presently passing through.

“The economic situation of the country today is really tight and people need assistance  We decided to add from the society ‘s purse to the little money generated from Zakkat to empower some of our members in order to reduce their sufferings.

We pray that Allah spare our lives to witness many years to come.
