The Katsina State Government has reaffirmed its resolve to strengthen women’s participation and inclusion in politics and governance, signaling renewed momentum toward more inclusive leadership across the state.

This commitment was restated by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda during a high-level engagement held at the Muhammadu Buhari House, Government House, Katsina. The meeting brought together women stakeholders, political party leaders, and government officials under the platform of the Reserved Seats for Women Association.

The gathering focused on widening opportunities for women in leadership, enhancing political participation, and deepening their involvement in decision-making processes. It also aligns with ongoing efforts by the administration to promote inclusive governance within the framework of existing electoral and party structures.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, Governor Radda described women’s inclusion as central to democratic progress and effective governance, reiterating his administration’s commitment to equal opportunities.

“Our great party has provided the mandate and opportunity for women to freely contest for positions. This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to inclusivity and equal participation in the political process,” the Governor said.
He further clarified that candidate emergence remains guided by provisions of the Electoral Act.

“As stipulated by the Electoral Act, there are only two recognised pathways for candidate emergence—either through primary elections or by consensus,” he added.

Governor Radda acknowledged persistent challenges limiting women’s political participation, stressing the need for sustained dialogue and collective responsibility. He expressed concern over situations where positions meant to empower women are not always occupied by them.

“It is unfortunate that, even in some cases, positions meant to advance women’s interests are not occupied by them,” he said.

Highlighting women’s electoral strength, the Governor noted their significant presence across polling units, describing them as a decisive force in the democratic process. He also praised their leadership qualities.
“From my experience in governance, women are committed, trustworthy, and bring balance that is essential for effective leadership,” he added.

Reinforcing his stance on democratic principles, the Governor emphasized consultation over imposition.

“I do not have the authority to compel anyone to support a particular candidate. What I can do is engage in consultations to understand the will of the people,” he said.
He encouraged women to remain focused, build capacity, and actively engage in political processes, while urging patience and unity among stakeholders.
“Together, we can ensure a fair, inclusive, and successful political process for the benefit of our state,” he said.

Earlier, the All Progressives Congress (APC) State Chairman, Hon. Dr. Bashir Gambo Saulawa, commended women’s contributions within the party and reaffirmed continued support.
“We are honoured to be in the company of our women, who are the backbone of our society. The party will continue to promote and strengthen women’s participation,” he said.

“We must allow due process to be completed. The Governor remains the leader of the party, and we will continue to work under his guidance,” he added.
The Chairperson of the North West Reserved Seats for Women Association and First Lady of Katsina State, Zulaihat Dikko Radda, traced the initiative’s roots to consultations under the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum.

“This initiative was properly channelled and advanced for implementation after wide consultations and engagements,” she said.
“Women have a crucial role to play in development, and this step is aimed at strengthening their participation in governance,” she added.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Aisha Aminu Malumfashi, described the effort as a landmark in the state’s political evolution.
“Since its creation, no administration has given women this level of recognition and opportunity,” she said.
“Women constitute a larger percentage of registered voters, and their inclusion is vital to the democratic process,” she noted, adding that efforts are underway to secure at least 30 percent representation for women.
The Chairman of the Hisbah Board, Abu Ammar, underscored the compatibility of women’s leadership with Islamic values.
“Islam recognises and permits women to take on leadership roles, provided such responsibilities align with moral and community values,” he said.
Echoing the collective resolve, APC Women Leader, Hajiya Aisha Matazu, expressed readiness among women to mobilise for greater participation.

“We are united and fully prepared to support women in their aspirations and roles within the political process,” she said.
The meeting drew key figures including the Deputy Governor, Hon. Faruk Lawal; Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Nasir Yahaya Daura; Principal Private Secretary to the Governor, Hon. Abdullahi Aliyu Turaji; alongside party officials, government functionaries, and women groups—reflecting a broad-based commitment to advancing inclusive governance in Katsina State.
