Hon. Commissioner, Rabi Salisu Hosts

‘Save the Children’ Team

Zainab Tanimu

Kaduna Northwest Nigeria

The Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Human Services and Social Development, hajiya Rabi Salisu has hosted a team from ‘Save the Children’  on a courtesy visit to her office.

The team led by Mr. Emanuel Mbusa while in her office gave a brief on their new project, “Reaching Out-of-School Children (ROOSE).

The project, Mr. Emanuel Mbusa explained, “aimed at supporting the state’s objective of ensuring inclusive and equitable provision of quality, accessible, and free education from primary to junior secondary levels.

The project targets school children aged 6-11, adolescents, and young adults aged 12-18.

The project’s strategies and interventions he said are inclusive for children with disabilities and are gender-sensitive and pro-poor. It also intends to promote inclusivity in primary education.

Additionally, special attention is paid to infrastructure support, including teaching facilities and learning supplies.

He noted that this process will ensure child-friendly, enabling, and learning centers that are conducive to supporting increased child enrollment, full participation, and completion, promoting sustainable quality learning outcomes in primary education development.

Some of the benefits of the project Mr. Emanuel Mbusa stressed include reaching out to 100 direct beneficiaries and indirectly benefiting 200 children in 9 LGAs, with 3 LGAs drawn from each of the 3 senatorial zones of the state.

More interventions he said are needed to support children with disabilities with assistive devices, amplifying children’s voices through the establishment of the Kaduna State Children’s Parliament, and creating a children’s advisory group with two children (male and female) nominated from Kaduna State as a critical space for their voices to be heard.

In her response, the Honourable Commissioner expressed her appreciation for this initiative and emphasized the importance of partnership through strengthened coordination. She noted that Save the Children is a major partner in the state, whose contribution is notable in areas of child protection programs.

The government she said has made remarkable achievements, which are crucial for Save the Children to leverage existing enabling structures. She informed that plans have reached advanced stages to host the Kaduna State Children’s Parliament, noting that she was in touch with the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

She requires a functional platform where all partners, government, and CSOs will meet to document the progress made so far in areas of child protection services.

The commissioner urged them to take advantage of the government’s open-door policy and provide more support on the issue of out-of-school children, including at-risk children and the Diversion Centre, aligning with the Ministry’s mandate in terms of policy implementation, capacity building, and intervention support.
