Kawo LEA Primary School Gets Educational Boost As Rotary Club Kaduna Commissions Library

In the spirit of humanitarian services and developmental growth, Rotary Club of Kaduna has made a stride in giving education a boost.

The club during the week commissioned a school library for the LEA Kawo  Model Nursery/Primary school pupils.

The commissioning exercise which was performed by Rotary Club District Governor, Princess Joy Okoro at the school premises had the presence of both government, private and community members.

The District  Governor in her speech commended Rotary Club Kaduna for the initiative which she said will go a long way in boosting education.

She charged the school authority and the students in particular to make good use of the opportunity to improve themselves.

The teachers she emphasised should ensure judicious use of the facilities.

In her plea, the club should look into the possibility of helping the school with solar energy to ease their light problem. By so doing making the environment conducive for learning.

“Rotary club of Kaduna, thank you for this wonderful project. It is something of reckoning. It is something we are always proud of. She urged them not to relent in their efforts in completing other projects they have ahead.

According to the president, Rotarian Ahmad Tijani, the renovation of the school library is part of their literacy project. It is part of the club’s drive towards adding values to education by  promoting excellence and reading culture.

Aside the library renovation, the club he informed intends to embark on other projects such as the ‘WASH’ project; known as “water, sanitation and hygiene” for the purpose of enhancing pupils health and providing conducive environment for learning.

“We are going to renovate the toilets which is part of our water and sanitation project coming up in march. The next project we intend to do as part of the basic education is the quizz competition.”

Tijani explained that ten schools are targeted to participate in the competition as a way of sustaining and promoting education excellence.

While urging the school to take good custodian of facilities provided, he assured of a healthy collaboration to make things work.

In their separate remarks, both the Education Secretary and Commissioner of Education stressed the importance of good library facility to pupils education.

The Education Secretary, speaking through Head of Schools, Kaduna north,  Chief Mrs Deborah welcomed the initiative of Rotary club Kaduna in boosting the library system which she said enhances literacy.

Going by rotary club’s antecedents, more good tidings she expects to come their way. She called for more collaboration in the pursuit of school improvement programme.

“We are happy to partner with you. We are willing and with our arms open to welcome your numerous activities and engagements.”

Commissioner, Ministry of Education  represented by Mrs. Helen Ma’azu  lamented the growing influence of social media on the children which greatly has affected their reading culture.

She described the situation as very disheartening as the focus on library is getting to extinction.

Parents she said are contributing factor to the decline in the reading culture of their children. Rather that guiding and encourage them to forming the habit of reading books, they are engrossed in social media.

Books are still very important, she emphasised. She commended the efforts of Rotary club Kaduna in helping to rejuvenate the reading culture in the pupil through the renovation of the school library.

“We are so glad with what is happening here today. I really commend rotary club because government cannot do it alone.

The District Head of Kawo Alhaji  Jibril Muhammed Magaji represented by Marafan  Kawo, Ibrahim Yau Na’aye thanked rotary club Kaduna for extending their gesture to their community. He described it as a laudable programme that will improve the lots of the pupils and by extension, the community.

Appreciating the club, he called for more partnership and intervention as the populated school of about 5,000 pupils is infrastructurally sick.

“We want to assure you that this library will be put into proper use. We are asking for a window whereby we can interact more so that you can have the need assessment of our community for your intervention. Going by record, we have almost 5,000 pupils here. So you could see that the infrastructure is suffering some decay and dilapidation”.

Speaking, the Secretary Rotary Club Kaduna, Rotarian Niyi Waheed Adepoju while explaining the condition of the school library before the renovation said many things have been put in place to meet the needs of the pupils.

The club he said is trying to encourage reading culture in the pupils by creating conducive atmosphere for learning.

Adepoju further explained that out of the ten schools  visited during their needs assessment project, LEA primary school Kawo was found wanting infrastructurally.

“We decided that there will be need for us to improve on this facility and encourage learning by introducing readers club in conjunction with rotary club. By God’s grace this has become part of rotary club.”

Rotary club Kaduna has provided more shelves and books. The library is also well light and other maintenance job carried out to make learning conducive.

The School head teacher, Mr. Falalu Sa’ad Ably represented by the Assistant Administration officer, Hajiya Lubabatu Muhammed thanked Rotary club Kaduna for their gesture. She prayed for God’s sustainability of the club and more collaboration in uplifting the school.
