Radda Inaugurates KT1T Committees, Targets 11m Trees Across Katsina by 2030

Zainab Tanimu

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has inaugurated the four-tier implementation structure for the Katsina One-Person-One-Tree (KT1T) Initiative, targeting the planting of two million trees in 2026 and 11 million by 2030.

The governor inaugurated the committees on Thursday at the Presidential Banquet Hall, Katsina, ahead of the statewide launch of the initiative scheduled for September 10, 2026.

The initiative is aimed at tackling desertification, climate change and environmental degradation, while promoting a greener and more climate-resilient Katsina State.

Speaking at the event, Governor Radda said KT1T forms part of the environmental component of his administration’s Building Your Future agenda, stressing that environmental protection has direct implications for agriculture, livelihoods, public health and the overall wellbeing of communities.

According to him, the initiative is built on the principle of “One Person, One Tree, One Responsibility,” making environmental protection a collective responsibility rather than the sole duty of government.

“This is not simply about distributing seedlings or organising tree-planting ceremonies. We want trees that are planted, protected, nurtured and established,” the governor said.

He explained that the implementation structure comprises the Central Steering Committee, three Zonal Monitoring Committees, 34 Local Government Supervisory Committees and 361 Ward Implementation Committees, creating a clear chain of responsibility from the state to the grassroots.

Governor Radda charged the committees to ensure proper allocation, planting and monitoring of seedlings, while urging traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, women, youths and other residents to take ownership of the programme.

He particularly stressed the importance of accountability at the ward level, noting that the success of KT1T would ultimately be measured by the survival and growth of the trees long after the official planting ceremonies.

Earlier, the Special Adviser on Climate Change, Prof. Alamin Mohammed, described KT1T as a practical step towards building a greener and more climate-resilient Katsina.

He said the programme would cover mobilisation, registration, seedling production and allocation, planting, monitoring and digital documentation.

Also speaking, the Katsina State ALGON Chairman and Chairman of Danja Local Government Area, Hon. Rabo Tambaya, pledged the support of the 34 Local Government Chairmen and 361 Ward Councillors, describing grassroots participation as essential to the success of the initiative.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Hon. Bashir Tanimu, similarly assured that the ministry would work closely with local government authorities to ensure effective implementation across the state. He urged committee members to see their assignments as a responsibility to both present and future generations.

With the statewide launch scheduled for September 10, the KT1T Initiative is expected to move into full implementation, with the state government relying on sustained community participation and monitoring to turn its ambitious tree-planting targets into a lasting environmental legacy for Katsina.
