COVID-19: SWAN Yet To Set Up Welfare Committee
Kaduna, North;West, Nigeria
The attention of the National Secretariat of Sports Writers’ Association of Nigeria, SWAN, has been drawn to a ridiculous statement without signature in the name of SWAN, titled: ‘COVID-19: SWAN Welfare Committee’.
The frivolous statement is appealing to the public and friends of SWAN to donate funds through one adhoc Welfare Committee with the following names: ” Adewale Ajayi, Chidoka Ndubueze and one Segun Ogunjimi”. According to the statement, ” the adhoc Welfare Committee is to reach out to patrons and friends of the Association, with a view to generating funds to enable palliative for members”.
It becomes imperative for the National Secretariat of SWAN to alert the public and security agencies about this dubious attempt to smear the name of the Association and to defraud the public. It is also important to inform the public and our members across the country that the Association is yet to set up any Committee in that regard.
SWAN, as an Association has moral records and patriot’s allegiance to the country since the outbreak of this deadly disease, which has been demonstrated by the various Chapters of SWAN across the country through our statements; keeping the public abreast of the danger of Coronavirus pandemic, while also encouraging Nigerians to adhere to the prescribed preventive measures against the spread of the disease.
As Sports Writers, our priority is to support the Federal Government, State Governments, and even at the Local Governments level in the fight to halt the spread of this virus by sensitizing the public and correcting the misconceptions about the COVID-19 through our various enlightenment programs.
We therefore advised the public to disregard the baseless statement, as the National Secretariat of SWAN is working very hard to ensuring that its members across the country are adequately taken care of, and remain save as they carry out their constitutional responsibility.
It is an indisputable fact that the World is currently at a standstill due to the scourge of the Coronavirus pandemic, causing pains to Nigerians which our members are not exception to.
As we call on the Government at various levels to brace-up their palliatives disbursement mechanism, noting that Nigerians are currently experiencing hunger due to the lockdown order prescribed by Governments as one of the preventive measures to tackle the spread of the disease in the country. We also enjoin Nigerians to pray fervently, as we are very optimistic that the trying period would soon be over.
Collectively, we can fight coronavirus to a standstill by adhering to all the preventive measures which include regular hand washing, social distancing, regular exercise at our various homes among others.
We use this medium to thank health workers, other key players in the health sector, the security agencies and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ for their selfless efforts in keeping the public informed, which has exposed many of them to the danger. It is on this note, that the leadership of SWAN is appealing to Government at all levels to look into the plight of these set of professionals and provide them with all the necessary support required.
SWAN also commends all those who had contributed in their own little ways to cushion the effects of this pandemic and put smiles on the faces of Nigerians. We pray that God Almighty reward them abundantly. At this period, we must be our brothers keeper.
