… Edo State Imposes Indefinite 24-Hour Curfew
Kaduna, North-West, Nigeria
The Lagos State Government has announced indefinite closure of schools.
This is as a result of the tension in the state due to the #ENDSARS protests.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed that all pupils/students in public and private schools stay at home.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, the safety of the pupils/students, parents and all staff working in schools is paramount at this critical period.
She, however, advised parents to keep an eye on their wards and not allow them to be used as willing tools in the hands of those who might want to hijack the protests to unleash mayhem on the society.
The Commissioner while encouraging schools to make use of distance teaching and learning tools such as radio, television and online media to make up as it was done during and post COVID-19 lockdown, said, a new date of resumption will be made known soon.
In another developnent, Edo state government has declared indefinite 24-hour curfew to curtail violent #ENDSARS protests that have rocked the state.
Banks also has as a result of the fear of possible escalation of the protest by youths, decided to close for business.
The Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, made this known in a statement on Monday.
The curfew is to take effect from 4pm, October 19, 2020.
The decision has become necessary because of recorded incidences of vandalism and attacks on individuals and institutions by hoodlums under the cover of #ENDSARS protest. The statement added.
The statement further reveals,
“While the government of Edo State respects the rights of its citizens to undertake legitimate protests, it cannot sit idly when hoodlums have taken laws into their hands to cause mayhem on innocent citizens and the state.
“By the directive, schools and businesses are to shut down activities accordingly. Those who cannot move safely are to stay put between now and 4pm till calmness is restored.
The government urges parents to caution their children, youths and wards, to avoid further breakdown of law and order.
The responsibility of government it states, “is to protect lives and property and maintain law and order. Anyone found outside violating the curfew would be dealt with according to the law,” the statement warned.
