DHQ Confirms Foiled Coup Plot Against President Tinubu, Officers to Face Military Trial

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has officially confirmed that a plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was uncovered within the Nigerian military, ending months of speculation surrounding the incident.

The controversy dates back to October 2025 when the Federal Government abruptly cancelled the parade planned to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary on October 1.

Shortly after, reports emerged suggesting the cancellation was connected to an alleged coup attempt. At the time, the DHQ denied any such link and maintained that the arrest of some military officers had nothing to do with a coup plot.

However, investigative reports later revealed that 16 officers were arrested in the first week of October in connection with the alleged plot, while two others reportedly went into hiding.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed that investigations conducted in line with military regulations had confirmed the involvement of some personnel in a coup plot. He said the probe had been concluded and its findings submitted to the appropriate authorities.

According to the statement, officers found to have a case to answer will be arraigned before relevant military judicial panels in line with the Armed Forces Act and other service regulations. Uba stressed that the process is aimed at ensuring accountability while respecting due process and fairness.

The DHQ noted that the measures being taken are strictly disciplinary and part of internal mechanisms to maintain order, discipline, and operational efficiency within the armed forces.

It also reaffirmed the military’s commitment to professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority.
