PRESIDENCY: OSINBAJO GROUP REACTS TO TINUBU’s 2023 DECLARATION
… I’ve Informed Buhari of my interest in contesting presidency, It’s a lifelong ambition, says, Tinubu
The General News, of today reports that
a Pro-Osinbajo group has issued a statement on former Lagos state’s Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration to run for President in 2023.
The Chairman of the Public Opinion Leaders Group, a unit of The Progressive Project (TPP), one of the groups rooting for the Osinbajo presidency in 2023, Shettima Umar Abba Gana, said Tinubu’s declaration would not change their minds.
He said: “What is happening is a democracy, he (Bola Tinubu) wants to run, we want our own man (Osinbajo) to run. That is the beauty of democracy; we want our man to come out because we believe he has some good qualities.
“Bola Tinubu also has some qualities, let them all come out; democracy cannot be only one aspirant let them all come out that is democracy.
“Osinbajo did not tell us to come out and campaign for him. We came together on our own and want him to come out and contest and we’re hoping that he’ll come out because he is a very good candidate.
“In a democracy, everybody has his own opinion, his own wish and his own vote. Let them come out and let us go to the field. “Ours is that this man is good, let him come out and we’ll support him. What we’re doing has nothing to do with Bola Tinubu coming out or not, let him come out and let everyone that wants to come out. It’s a democracy that is not a problem”, he said.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the other hand has in its Monday report in Abuja stated that,
Bola Tinubu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said he has informed President Muhammadu Buhari of his intention to contest the presidency in the 2023 general election.
Tinubu spoke to its state house correspondents on Monday after a meeting with Buhari at the presidential villa.
The former governor of Lagos, who has been in the news in recent times over calls for him to contest, however said he is still consulting on the matter.
“I’ve informed the president of my intention but I have not informed Nigerians yet. I’m still consulting. And I have no problem consulting. I’ve not set a parameter of limitation to the extent of how many people I will consult,” he said.
“You will soon hear. All you want to hear is the categorical declaration. You’ve gotten that truth from me that I have informed Mr. President of my ambition and you don’t expect more answers than that.”
When asked about what the president’s response was, the APC chieftain said Buhari didn’t ask him not to run.
“That is our business. He is a democrat. He didn’t ask me to stop. He didn’t ask me not to attempt to pursue my ambition; it’s a lifelong ambition,” he said.
“So, why do I expect him to say more than that? You are running a democratic dispensation and you must adopt the principles and the values and virtues of democracy. That’s it.”
Speaking further on his ambition, Tinubu said with what he achieved in Lagos as governor, he has the capacity to rule Nigeria.
On speculations that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo may also vie for the ticket, Tinubu said he would rather not discuss any individual.
The development comes days after Abdulmumin Jibrin, a former house of representatives member, said plans are underway for Tinubu to declare his bid to contest.
Jibril, who is the Director General of the Bola Tinubu Support Group Council had described the APC chieftain as ” the best option for Nigeria. “
