US – Iran Ceasefire Deal: Trump suspends attacks, Tehran agrees to 2-week ceasefire

Iran and US have agreed to a two-week ceasefire deal with negotiations to begin on Friday in Pakistan’s Islamabad, after US President Donald Trump said he would suspend attacks subject to Tehran agreeing to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Though happy about the ceasefire, some Iranians are still sceptical on what to expect.

Iran’s foreign minister says safe passage through the key waterway will be possible for a period of two weeks via coordination with Iran’s armed forces.

Trump’s statement came after Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asked the US president to extend his deadline for a deal, and Iran to fully open the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian troops will be overseeing the passage in the Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistan had invited Iranian and US delegations to Islamabad for talks on Friday.
The prime minister says he hopes the talks will succeed in achieving a sustainable peace.
President Trump’s has said that the 10-points proposal by Iran is a good
basis for negotiations, and that Iran is going to consider the 15-points proposal by the United States.
It will be recalled that Trump earlier in a threat had warned that the US could take Iran out “in one night” and that a “whole civilisation will die tonight, never to be brought back again” – threats that drew condemnation from the United Nations chief and the Pope.

Meanwhile the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said ⁠Israel ⁠supports Trump’s two-week pause in attacks on Iran, but the ⁠”ceasefire does not ⁠include Lebanon”.

Pakistan’s prime minister had previously said all parties had agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere, including Lebanon.
