Empowering Katsina’s Farmers: ACReSAL Lights the Path to Climate-Smart Agriculture

Zainab Tanimu

In the sun-scorched fields of Jibia and Kaita Local Government Areas, where the earth whispers of uncertain rains and rising temperatures, a quiet revolution is taking root. The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project has brought together farmers from these communities, offering not just knowledge, but a lifeline—training them in climate-smart agriculture and sustainable use of farm inputs, so they may turn adversity into abundance.

The workshop, held in the heart of Katsina State, was more than a series of lectures. It was a gathering of hope. Alhaji Nafiu Musa, the State Project Coordinator, opened the session with a pledge: “This initiative is designed to equip farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to maximize the benefits of agricultural support expected to be distributed by the project.”

He described the training as a cornerstone of ACReSAL’s broader mission—to strengthen agricultural resilience, fortify food security, and nurture sustainable farming practices across the state. Alhaji Musa was quick to acknowledge the enabling role of Governor Dikko Radda, whose unwavering commitment, he said, has created the conditions for interventions that genuinely uplift farmers and rural communities.

“Apply what you have learned,” he urged the participants. “Let it transform your fields, your harvests, your futures.”

Before the training unfolded, Sanusi Faskari, the project’s Environmental Safeguard and Agricultural Officer, explained its deeper purpose: to introduce farmers to modern techniques that not only counter the harsh realities of climate change but also ensure that every seed, every drop of fertilizer, and every agrochemical is used efficiently and responsibly.

Resource persons then took the stage, weaving together science and tradition. Malam Tanimu Hamza, representing the Katsina State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KTARDA), spoke of the delicate art of input application—how proper use can boost yields, cut waste, and spare the land from further harm. Dr. Ahmed Aliyu of Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic followed with strategies for adapting to erratic weather, conserving natural resources, and building lasting productivity on even the most fragile soils.

But the true heartbeat of the workshop came from the farmers themselves. In lively discussions, they tackled climate adaptation, soil management, and the everyday challenges of their trade. Many expressed deep gratitude to ACReSAL for organizing such a timely and beneficial workshop.

“We will not keep this knowledge to ourselves,” they pledged. “We will take it back to our communities, share it with our fellow farmers, and together, we will grow stronger against the changing skies.”

In the semi-arid landscapes of Katsina, where resilience is not a choice but a necessity, a new chapter has begun—written not in words alone, but in the hopeful hands of those who till the land.
