Nnamdi Kanu Gets Life Jail Term as Court Delivers Landmark Verdict

In a landmark judgment that drew national attention, the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on several charges, including terrorism, membership of an unlawful organisation, and incitement.

The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by Justice James Omotosho in a courtroom filled with heavy security presence, legal representatives, and keen observers — a testament to how closely the nation had followed the long-running trial.

While delivering the ruling, Justice Omotosho stated that the prosecution had convincingly shown that Kanu’s actions and public broadcasts contributed to violent disturbances across parts of the South-East. He described the offences as serious threats to national security, emphasizing that the sentence was necessary for deterrence.

According to the judgment, “The defendant, having been given every opportunity to present his defence in accordance with Section 36 of the Constitution, is hereby convicted.”

The court further ordered that Kanu be held in Protective Custody in a correctional facility, with strict restrictions preventing him from using mobile phones or any electronic communication devices.
