Media Has Big Role to Play in Uniting the People – Commissioner
Zainab Tanimu
Kaduna, Northwest Nigeria
The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Hon. Samuel Aruwan has charged the media to strengthen its role in unifying the people.
This charge was given at the Nigeria Union of Journalists correspondents chapel’s Seminar/Award ceremony held in Kaduna.
The media being an agenda setter must live up to its ethical values to move the nation forward.
The fact that it is the voice of the voiceless, there is the need to strike a balance in it reportage. He said.
Presenting his lecture titled, “Tackling Security Challenges: The Role of the Media”, he lamented the present trend of the social media whereby anyone can disseminate information capable of destabilizing the nation.
He urged journalists to rise up to fight fake news saying,
“As it is often said, information is power. An individual’s power to act is limited to the information he is exposed to. As such, the impact of perception on public discourse is huge, and those perceptions are shaped by the media.
“The power of the media is like two sides of the same coin. On the one hand, independent and pluralistic media provides a platform for healthy debate and sharing of opinions.
On the other hand, media can be grossly misused and abused for the purposes of propaganda, to incite hatred, spread rumours and divisive narratives and therefore create tensions. It has become even more pervasive in recent times with technologies like the internet, social media and instant messaging.
“The crucial task for the media now, is creating that balance between protecting freedom of expression and preventing harm caused by unrestrained free speech.
“Finding that balance is very important, especially in a pluralist society like ours, which unfortunately has been charged with vibes of social, political and ethno-religious division.
Journalists must guide against being used by unscrupulous elements. He added.
“Journalists must be bold, frank, fearless and take risks but they must anchor these attributes with sincerity, honesty and adhering to facts, devoid of pursuing  divisive agendas which are threats to common good.
“However as a professional journalist, I am able to see quite clearly the role that responsible, ethical journalism can play towards helping our efforts and building our society.
In the era of the internet, this has become more difficult as blogs and websites are being operated by non professionals which he said has posed more security challenges.
“It is now very easy for vast sections of the public to be sold fantastic narratives of ethno-religious conflict as substitutes for the stark reality of banditry, criminality, terrorism, and economic tensions. Terrorists and criminals are now given ethnic tags, which only serve as cloaks to further protect them from the glare of truth.
“As members of this elite group, the media, we must ditch the divisive narratives sold for decades by desperate power mongers. We can no longer buy into denigration and dehumanization. We must not buy into ethno-centric politics and narrow sentiments.
Lamenting, the Commissioner encouraged journalists to engage in peace journalism as that will go a long way to help stem the situation.
“Journalists must eschew judgmental representations and describe reality without exaggeration and sensationalism.
“The media can play a crucial role in building our peace, through effective peace journalism. Peace journalists can investigate the causes behind a conflict and the true motives of the participants, while making sure to humanize all victims of the conflict.
“Journalists should not exploit loss and suffering through selective condemnations, but make sure that the reporting is balanced. Peace journalism should be focused on preventing further escalation of conflict.
He assured government’s commitments in tackling the security problem
“The Government on its part will continue to collaborate with security agencies, and engage productively with citizens to address security challenges across the state. The consistent standpoint of the Kaduna State Government is recourse to law by all aggrieved persons, as the solution to ceaseless cycles of conflict.
“I believe that at this critical stage of our national development, lt is time for the media to unite our people with a shared hope and a shared vision. No more of bickering and bitterness. We can and will become a thriving community that celebrates its diversity as its most compelling reason to come together.
