June 12:  Adopt Female Presidential/ Governorship Running Mates – NAWOJ tells Politicians

The Kaduna State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ has added its voice to the ongoing political search for credible leadership.

The leadership has urged the political parties in the country to in the spirit of fairness adopt female presidential/ governorship running mates ahead of the 2023 general elections.

This was contained in a statement signed by NAWOJ Chairperson, Hajiya Fatima Aliyu and made available to newsmen.

The move she noted will not only serve as democracy gift to Nigerian women as they mark the June 12 democracy day across the country but will also ensure that women’s voices are heard and their issues given adequate attention.

The call by Fatima, buttresses an earlier call made by the National President of NAWOJ, Ladi Bala.

There is need to promote gender equality in the political leadership in Nigeria she said. Thus, the necessity for gender sensitivity in all political offices.

With the role of women changing globally over time, Fatima argued that,

the role of a woman has changed over generations and looks different in other parts of the world. Their traditional roles of bearing and raising of  children, and that of  managing the household notwithstanding, women should be given the opportunity to contribute their quota in nation building.

Giving her commendation for the peaceful conduct of the primary elections,  she said.

“We commend all political parties in the state for conducting peaceful primary elections. We congratulate the winners and wish them hitch-free electoral process in the forthcoming campaigns and  general elections.

 In her plea, she stated.

“NAWOJ strongly appeals to the leadership of political parties to, in the interest of inclusiveness and development, consider picking women as running mates for the offices of Vice President and Deputy Governors.
